I have followed Tim's advice and plumped for a set of Soundmagic E10 earphones. Amazon have a special price on the black/red and black/gold versions at the moment. I'm taking it on trust but the E10s have a great reputation and have received good reviews.
My cheap Sony in-ear phones have done well but are starting to look a little tatty so I wanted better sound for not much money to go with my Sansa Clip+ player.
Review to follow.

I don't know how you can tolerate shoving those in your ears. I do use earplugs from time to time, but I've never come across comfortable in ear phones. I do use ear buds occasionally, but they're more akin to these. They fit in the folds of your ear, not actually in the opening of your ear canal.

I like the direct-in sound and also the isolation from the real world. They're especially good on aeroplanes.
Those look interesting - what are they?

How much? Best I can see on Amazon is £24.
Quite fancy these but can't justify them just now.

I paid £23.98 this morning for the Black/Gold ones but the price seems to have gone up again.

Ok, a quick assessment: the E10s have a very noticeable lack of personality or tonal tilt. This is a good thing as they just let the music through. Although at first I thought they sounded a little dull compared with my inexpensive Sony in-ears, in fact they have a better balance with really well defined bass lines that you can feel pulsating. The all-important midrange plays vocals very well and with very low levels of sibilance, which again is a good thing in my book and shows that the drivers are well sorted.
Dynamics are where they leave the Sonys behind, and indeed my Superlux headphones. They really do make a good effort at conveying realism and can go surprisingly loud on peaks without limiting or compressing them. Overall, these earphones sound very nice indeed and are an absolute audio bargain at the £23 I paid for them.

OK,sold to the big fella from Scotland.
Can't justify them just now but when my current headphones get broken/lost/savaged by the cat E10s it is. Cheers for the info!

Having now used them for extended periods of time, the E10s continue to impress. Firstly, they're comfortable over long periods, an important point but not something I've always found with in-ears. The selection of ear plugs supplied is impressive, and you should be able to find ones that fit. The default ones work very well for me.
Secondly, the supression of external noise is very good, which I appreciated especially in the noisy environment of an aircraft in flight. Once the music is playing, external sounds are virtually banished, and without the odd effects brought about by active noise cancellers, which I don't like.
Thirdly, and most importantly as far as TAS members should be concerned, they sound extremely good. All-round clarity is as good as I've heard while tonal neutrality is better than most, including some Sennheisers at twice the price. There is an impressive turn of bass, depending on how well the seal is made with your ear. Fine detail is everywhere and there is a sense of a proper soundstage inside your head with good dynamics.
The E10s have plenty of sensitivity for my Sansa Clip+ to drive them to loud levels. I like their quality of finish and overall smartness. My only gripe is that a straight plug is more likely to be damaged than an L-plug, otherwise they're an absolute bargain at the price.
