When everything turned black, including cameras, I bloody hated it. Metal should look like metal.

New from SMSL, the M300 using AK4497. Costs just over 200 quid. Rather eccentric looking and available in three colours ... LOL.

Two clocks is good, but input and power over the same (micro?) USB port? I'm not so sure.

For two-hundred-quid I'm not really knocking it, Tony, I'd just like to have seen separate power and signal inputs. It wouldn't have added a great deal one to the cost, one would have thought. As Martin said, if you wanted to use a LPSU with it then you'd be left without a signal input over USB.

Hi Paul
I was just me, sorry I usually get moaned at for suggest slightly more costly items, though not quite in the Brooky inspired price ranges! For a starting point with a few little tweaks it will make a very tidy front end for a lot of guys I feel.

For a starting point with a few little tweaks it will make a very tidy front end for a lot of guys I feel. There's nothing to apologise for, Tony. We each cut our cloth according to our means. I run what was, on release, a two-hundred-quid DAC (an SMSL in fact) with my Raspberry Pi setup, and my thought was simply that I wouldn't buy that particular two-hundred-quid DAC if I needed to replace it because of what I consider to be a very simple to fix design flaw. It also seemed a bit unusual, because I've had quite a bit of SMSL kit and it's always struck me as well made and well specced for the money.

For anyone thinking about saving up for a Nagra HD DAC X, by the way, it's a cool $65K, which is just shy of £51K.

Even being generous, that's £10k for components and construction, £40k for brand, R&D and distribution.

I do like how their gear still has a visual nod to their legacy products - reminds me of the Nagra sound recorder I used on a 16mm film production course many years ago. Superb, industry standard kit back then.
