This is a rarity - a new collection of piano works by Moritz Mozkowski. Gramophone gave the piano recording a bit of stick - “a well-regulated but plummily voiced, closely miked Bechstein in the empty acoustic of the Église Évangélique Saint-Marcel, Paris”I can’t comment on that with current listening arrangements, but it’s certainly worth your attention if like me you aren’t averse to a little romantic fare from time to time.

It sounds quite nicely recorded to me, obviously in a large space but I wouldn't say it's too closely mic'd or plummy.

Well I'm enjoying it very much on desktop speakers. In a varied piano recital it would be great to see the boy Mozkowski making a comeback! Hmm ... La Buniatishvili comes to mind.

Brilliant - no silly marketing and no 'concept' behind it. Looks like Decca maybe getting the message with NB.
Have you listened?

Not sure I would tangle with such a strong willed lady of Italian/Scottish descent, either! No, not listened yet. The VC is still 'blank'. It was only released today, I think.

It's up and playing for me (in 24/96). Great sound on my PC system and NB plays superbly, as usual.

Decca's youngest ever signing, the 12 year old Christian Li from Australia. Here's one for Slinger ...

I think there should be a ban on signing up these kids, I think it's child exploitation.
16yo minimum, maybe 18.
It doesn't do them any good - a lot of them burn out ne'er to be heard from again.

I wonder what the obligations are in their contracts in terms of number of recordings/ PR /concerts.
It's not at all a good choice for his first release IMO. Because of the fearsome reputation and nature of the piece, it is immediately setting him up as a Wunderkind and that is deeply problematic.
You can see TV stations queuing up to get him on some light entertainment show to wow the audience with these kind of pyrotechnics. Why not introduce him to the world as a musician first and foremost, not a spectacle? Where do you go next when you start with such a work?

Agreed, it's a piece for showmanship at a concert encore, not to push a child into the spotlight in their first recording.

Interesting to see a mature violinist reflecting on himself as a 13 yr old prodigy.

There's a new recording of the two Shostakovich Violin Concertos by Alina Ibragimova on Hyperion. I can't find it on streaming as yet.

Hyperion doesn't do the streaming thing. They still want you to buy the silver plastic discs.
