Ah, yes - I saw that one on eBay and thought "should I?". It was the recent used one on eBay? That's right J!

First thoughts on the D50. Comes in a decent box with a very snug fit around the protective foam - excellent! You get instructions and cables included. It’s very well made and although smaller than the D30 feels more substantial. The D30 has a brushed aluminium finish and the D50 is smooth. Ridiculously heavy for its size at 480g - has it got lead weights in there?? Unlike the D30 it uses dual ESS9038. You can choose from seven filters on the D50 - no choice on the D30. There is a volume control on the D50 (unlike the D30) but I will be using my usual Chinese RVC to attenuate. Going to power it from my 5V Powerbank that also feeds my DigiOne.

Unlike the D30 it uses dual ESS9038. Not the full-blown 9038s, it uses dual ES9038Q2M (mobile version). Even so, that's a lot of performance in a small case.

Thanks for that clarification Martin.
Don't think I will get the chance to sample the D50 till the Bank Holiday is over ...

Looking forward to your findings, Jules.
If you haven't already, get it powered up and running for a good few days if my experience is anything to go by.

It's 3 months old apparently so hoping it has some hours on it already ...

My TAD CD/DAC/Pre and power amp had many hours on them already. CD box was around 8 months old Think they are still running themselves in

Yep, my LKS took weeks of running and being left switched on. I was still hearing change last night.

Bit of a surprise this.
In the D30 vs D50 contest there is only one winner at the moment, and that is the humble D30.
It’s simply a more natural, coherent and musical performer. There is something about the D50 that doesn’t work for me - in my system it doesn’t have the fluidity of the D30, and I find it a bit hard edged and uninvolving. Can’t hear much differences by changing the filters. Am using the same cables to compare the two. Power is very different though - the D30 has the 15V linear whilst the D50 takes 5V from my powerbank. Maybe it would prefer a 5V linear, who knows …
I’m not sure I have the will to put many more hours on the D50 to see if it needs more ‘burn-in’ as it is only a few months old.
I’m now pounding out the new Whitesnake album at nose bleed levels and the D30 simply puts a massive smile on my face.

Now there's a result that nobody, especially you, anticipated. I'd definitely try the LPS route before giving up on it though, not to mention swapping some leads. Have you tried, or can you try, swapping inputs (co-ax to optical, or vice-versa) on the D50?

Optical isn't an option for me Paul as I'm using the digione ...
So I think power is the only experiment to make - I could get a 5V dual USB output lpsu for £45 from China but I'm undecided about whether to pursue it though, as I'm not convinced this DAC is to my taste.

I'm not sure I have the patience to do some kind of forensic analysis of every part of the system!
One thing I could try is to use the PSU that came with the Digione to see how that changes things.

If you just remember the basics, you can try to bring the D50 better matched into your system. Also, as Mike says, it needs to be fully burned-in and warmed up.
- Power - Noise - Supports - Cables
