A good review of the project stream box It could be a cheap way into file playing for people

Six hundred quid, no optical or co-ax out, only USB or HDMI(?). On a positive note, the user interface looks very, very, very, much like Volumio. My immediate reaction is that it looks like something that's out of date before it's on the shelves, and at that price for something that looks like a Pi-based setup but doesn't have the flexibility of a Pi-based setup... It's cheap for a streamer I suppose, and I like what Pro-ject try to do most of the time, but I'm not awfully impressed with this I'm afraid.

Agreed, John. It's definitely got a place in the market for people who don't want to bugger about with a Pi, but why wouldn't you want to?

You're right about Volumio, Paul. It looks like an OEM version.

Hans seems to like the Pro-ject, and it's essentially an industrial Raspberry Pi with extra circuitry and Volumio OS. For those of us using a Pi with DigiOne and Volumio, his praise comes as no surprise at all.

The Pro-Jet gets a Best Buy recommendation in the Jan-Mar 2019 HiFi Critic.

It could be a cheap way into file playing for people I haven't even looked at the video, but I see from a later comment that it's 600 quids worth, so it isn't cheap. I have a Chromecast Audio player running as a LMS client - that is a cheap way into streaming

According to the review the S2 ultra is very close to the SoTm Neo Ultra at leas than half the price. If my SoTm Neo can kick my Pi and Allo Sparkys butt then the S2 must be pretty decent, John Westlake had a hand in the development too which might explain why it gets great reviews 😉

If it comes close to the Neo that quite high praise and a definite step up from the DigiOne

Giant Little Dwarf. Good, clear video. The size is appealing and set-up looks easy enough. No coax a bit shit. I would try one second-hand but 600 a bit much to take a punt on. Will be interesting to find some user comparisons to the digione.

I think its being USB only severely limits its potential, otherwise a nice unit.

If it comes close to the Neo that quite high praise and a definite step up from the DigiOne close to the Ultra Neo @ £1200 😉 Not the basic Neo @ £380

I'd be interested in trying one - would fit quite neatly into my set up and enable me to retire the PC. Maybe soon.
