Probably my favourite Philip Glass work.
Why they haven't brought it out on DVD is a source of much bafflement to me.
I saw it at the ENO in London many years ago, and it was wonderous to behold. Slower than the CBS/Sony recording, and all the better for that imo. The CDs are still excellent though, and the recording is also very good.

Nice, Jerry. Can you play the SACD layer? Nope - I listen in glorious 14 bit CD sound with my Techie SL-P1200

I think you'll find it's 16-bit really Mmm, when TonyC kindly upped the PSU section for me I think he said it was an early 14 bit version of the deck.
Heh heh - it has convinced me that there are far more important things than the number of digital bits!

and Both excellent - if I had to choose I think I'd go for the Ricci for his somewhat more characterful playing, as well as rather more detailed sound quality. As it is, I am pleased to own both (as well as several other performances).

Ooo - there's something very yummy about Strauss's early chamber music!

Mmm, when TonyC kindly upped the PSU section for me I think he said it was an early 14 bit version of the deck. It really can't be, if it didn't decode all 16 bits it would sound terrible. More likely, it's similar to Philips' first players which used 14-bit DACs arranged in an oversampling configuration where all 16 bits are decoded by clever implementation of Information Theory.

An 89 minute CD - I didn't know that was possible! Enjoyable, too.

Really meaty harpsichord music! Meaty playing, too! - and very well recorded. The pic is of the CD cover with stickers for all the awards it has won!

How does it compare with the mighty Karajan, Jerry?

Very different - it's the much longer original version. Tintner on Naxos did it in 77 minutes - this guy does it in 89! But nonetheless much more interesting than Tintner (I think the 3rd was his one failure in his Bruckner cycle). The Karajan on Dg is a substantially shorter version (about 57 minutes), much tauter - and Karajan is much tauter and more exciting anyway. The Ballot recording was done in the very reverberant acoustic of St Florian church/cathedral (where Bruckner worked most of his life!) and so is fascinating for that reason alone. If I had to choose it would be easy - Karajan! But I am happy to own both (and several more 3rds as well!)

I think Jerry recommended this? Very nice, but sad, music.
