Excellent!
Not being the greatest Mozart aficionado, I didn't even know he had composed these works.

I used to use a cookery book stand for my record covers. Is that something similar?

You can hear in just the first few minutes of this recent Andris Nelsons live recording of Shosta 4 with the Boston Symphony that it's going to be an entirely more satisfying affair than the BSO performance at the Lighthouse, Poole.
The rhythms are so much more taut and clipped, adding the required tension and sense of darkness and doom that you need. No flab here! The brass projects with that much more power and menace whilst the woodwind and string solos are more engaging and lyrical. When the playing is more restrained I'm getting a better sense of how sinister the music can be, especially from the strings. But that first huge climax in the First Movement is utterly terrifying! Most importantly, the narrative of the music starts to make sense here.
The Funeral March of the final movement so beautifully observed, the woodwind so haunting. The musical evaporation and stasis of the codas, darkly prophetic, and very moving indeed. I wonder what warning we can heed from this today?
I really like this recording which is no surprise as the 10th in this cycle is a regular reference for me.

I used to use a cookery book stand for my record covers. Is that something similar? No, it is a stand specifically made for this purpose, gifted to me at Christmas. Currently playing: Frédéric Chopin: NotturnoEliane Rodrigues, Piano

"Music is such a gift, it keeps you young"
- Eliane Rodrigues, Pianist magazine, September 2018
Doesn't appear to be doing her any harm at 63!
She was a child prodigy, her first recital was aged 5 and first performed with an orchestra at 6! Difficult to comprehend how this happens ...

I don't think I will ever tire of Schubert's "Standchen."

Stunning performance of Scriabin's Piano Sonata No 5 from Maria Lettberg.
This has everything I want from a Scriabin recital, a true reference with a heady and intoxicating mix of power, delicacy and dynamics, revelling in a swirling vortex of emotions; a portal to another world.
People joke about Scriabin's following of theosophy which is all fine, but from a personal perspective there's no other composer I know that has quite such a profoundly transcendental effect on me.
Over to you.

He's just not a composer I know at all well.
I need to play some more.

I love Def Leppard but the big question here is WHY do rock bands feel the need to do this?
"Animal" with the RPO. Once is enough.

Borodin 2 - a quintessentially Russian symphony.
