Now this is truly special.
Yevgeny Sudbin with Scriabin's Piano Sonata 5. Here's a man who truly understands the intoxicating language of Scriabin, it's pure ether.
The thunderous climaxes are almost overwhelming in their visceral impact. A glittering prize.

Damn, I lost what I had been typing. The opening gave me strong Respighi vibes, followed by touches of Stravinsky. Then that gives way to Richard Strauss' tone poem style of narrative, such as Don Quixote. The finale is strongly Strauss in feel.
NIcely performed and recorded. I like the artwork, too.

Liszt - Totentanz
Why have I not heard this before?
Most entertaining it is and not short on drama, after all it is "The Dance of Death"!
From wiki -
< In the young Liszt we can already observe manifestations of his obsession with death, with religion, and with heaven and hell. According to Alan Walker, Liszt frequented Parisian "hospitals, gambling casinos and asylums" in the early 1830s, and he even went down into prison dungeons in order to see those condemned to die. >
Interesting also to read about the excellent Brazilian soloist Arnaldo Cohen who shows a wonderful range of emotions in a bravura performance of this work -
"Professor Cohen is a Fellow of the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, and taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London."

Shostakovich Symphony No. 12 - Haitink The one many love to hate. Well, I don't, I bought this very recording on LP back in the 1980s and I still think it's a very underrated symphony. It has some glorious music in the opening movement, and the build up in (Battleship) Aurora is thrilling. Does your system have the dynamic range to cope with this extreme performance? open.qobuz.com/track/523703

Beethoven Symphony No. 5, Kleiber I was just mentioning the 3rd 'sunrise' movement of the famous 5th symphony. It's quite stunning and only 5 mins long. open.qobuz.com/track/177264168

New from Les Siecles - wonderfully evocative dance music from Paris hotspots of the late 19th century.

Jochum - one of my favourite conductors. Saw him some 44 years ago and he was already leaning against a stool to conduct, but what absolute power he had over the VPO. Incredible charisma.

Beethoven - Eugen Jochum, Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam* – Symphony No. 7 Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony No. 7 album cover Label: Philips – 6500 090 I particularly like that that recording, I also have it in Karajan Beethoven Symphony boxed set 2740 172, I will have a listen to that shortly, being a bit OCD it is nice to compare.
