The best version I have of this classic, full of attack, dynamics, sweeps along with great musicality, feeling and detail. If you love this piece get a copy. Antonio Vivaldi, Nils-Erik Sparf, The Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble* – The Four Seasons Label: BIS – LP-275, BIS – BIS-LP-275 Format: Vinyl, LP, Album Country: Sweden Released: Jan 1985

My very favourite is only available as an LP. It's the Eugene Ormandy recording with the Philadelphia Orchestra on EMI. Outstanding performance and an opening organ to die for. If you ever find one, buy it! Hi Martin, I have found a supposedly NM copy(EMI) on discos for a very reasonable price, so look forward to a listen of this version. Thanks for the advice.

The year I moved to Sweden - 1985. I used to go past the church where it was recorded. I've owned the CD since 1988. Stream it now of course🙂

One of NAXOS's freebies I've only just got around to playing. It's rather good.

Schubert symphonies don't generally seem to get to me in the same way his piano music does, so let's see how this live performance of "The Great" fares from Staatskapelle Dresden under Sir Colin Davis.
The first movement huffs and puffs with steely nobility and determination but doesn't end up going anywhere significant musically for me.
The second is much more cohesive and enjoyable, heralded by a sweetly lyrical and brilliantly taken oboe solo. There appears to be an effortless sense of ebb and flow to the music as intimate tender themes with an aristocratic backbone suddenly explode full frame with a fiery ardour and purpose about them.
The third movement features a most memorable and rousing waltz motif, with an uplifting sentiment that conjures up a courtly scene assembled with the cream of nineteenth century society. A majorly refined performance here, as throughout this recording to be fair.
The finale is a spirited romp through European salons of old which injects some heightened drama into the score for the first time. You might have thought that the brass section would stand out here but personally I found the string tone and performance to be quite thrilling in places with their phrasing and shaping being properly idiosyncratic. Superbly marshalled by Sir Colin with a full frontal attack supported by full range dynamics which keep you gripped at every turn. I would have loved to have been at the concert and how wonderful this recording was made for posterity. I must reserve an opinion on sound quality until I can listen on the main system. Highly recommended ++.

I'm sure I've played that performance before, Jules. I'll give it another listen.

Wow. Christian Tetzlaff is trying to outgun the legendary Herman Krebbers in terms of pure visceral aggression with this live recording of the Brahms VC - thrilling stuff so far ... Robin Ticciati has the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin exactly on the same page.
