This will be one of my best albums of the year, for sure. A superbly persuasive and satisfying set of Preludes from Alice Sara Ott in a concept album that actually makes sense, Echoes of Life.
The Chopin and contemporary works all display fleeting emotions in these miniature time capsules; you can really hear her deep connection to these works.
I'll leave Alice to explain.

Strauss - Zarathustra, Nelsons Wow, this one is new to me. Powerful organ and, especially, timpani in the opening, all-important sweet strings from the second movement, great brass section. I'm still looking for a replacement for the ultimate Ormandy/Philadelphia/EMI that I had on LP but which doesn't appear to be on streaming.  |

I can highly recommend this set of Bach Cello Suites which are played on a violoncello da spalla (shoulder cello) Here's some more info - www.bachvereniging.nl/en/bwv/bwv-1012/I think Sergey Malov gives a supremely musical and convincing performance - the tone, timbre and phrasing has a great feeling of authenticity to my ears. |
