A pleasantly varied and enjoyably laid back album by John Metcalf, a Welsh (I assume) composer. All a good listen, but the highlight is the Cello Symphony- the opening movement of which is kind of reminiscent of Gorecki's 3rd symphony but more cheerful!

John McCabe makes a very strong case for John Joubert's piano sonatas in this chamber music collection. Powerful music.

John McCabe - Symphony No. 1 Thanks for reminding me to play him, Jerry. I really like this piece even though it appears to have been lifted from an LP. open.qobuz.com/track/20821602

After dissing this lady's compositions I thought I'd give her another listen.
Rather enjoying this!

With Lisa Gerrard involved, this should be good. I'll listen later.

With Lisa Gerrard involved, this should be good. I'll listen later. Her voice is potent and she sings powerfully, one octave lower than Dawn Upshaw in the first (excellent) recording. I think it works although I was surprised when I heard her come in half way through the first movement. Beth Gibbons (of Portishead) also makes a pretty good fist of it, really surprising to hear her soar like that.

I've never listened to the 'Ring' Cycle in its entirety, just snippets, so I thought it was time to rectify that . . . here goes then ( not all in one hit though ) Sir Georg Solti - Wagner: Der Ring Des Nibelungen

Very brave of you Tim.
The Solti is meant to be a classic recording though for those trained in the dark arts of extreme pain management.
To be fair there's plenty of decent music in it but I still struggle with the vocals.

I bought the Barenboim full dvd set thinking that the full audio visual experience would help.
It didn't. I didn't get very far into it at all before I gave up and sold it.

The Solti Gotterdamerung is epic, but I wouldn't attempt to listen to it all.
I remember my sister saying that sitting through some four plus hours of Die Meistersinger was the worst live experience she has ever had.
