^ Seriously good opening tracks to each of the 2 scenes, especially the first - they'll encourage me to explore his symphonies - but I'd classify the rest as more or less balletic drivel.
It's a bit like film music, every couple of minutes you get jerked to the next scene and it's all change. I'm sure it makes sense when watching the ballet (or film) but fairly bloody useless standalone.
... And there's a lot of annoying cutesy music as well.

I can take or leave Glazunov symphonies 3 and 9, but the 2nd is a pippin. #1 next.

... Numero 1 I can manage without. On 4i now, sumptuously lovely. I hope the rest lives up to the 1st mvt.

Glazunov symphonies 2,5 & 4i get my vote as being quite special.

Well yes it's just excerpts, not the complete score, so it's going to jump around a bit.

Marvellously atmospheric, the whole album. Britten, Bridge & Bax - the British 3Bs

Still making up my mind on this but it's definitely growing on me!
A track especially composed for Hilary Hahn from her forthcoming album. Quite stunning depth of tone.
Thoughts gentlemen?

I've sampled the Rautavaara sound world previously and not liked it at all. This Hahn piece is the first that I've quite liked. I wouldn't have recognised it as being by Rautavaara. I'll have to give her music another try. Edit Ah, no, that was complete cobblers. I was getting my contemporary Scandinavian composers completely muddled up. I was thinking of Saariaho. Easy mistake to make. Lot of 'a's in both. Yeah, this one, Rautavaara, is a bloke and is quite accessible! Try this - nature inspired and nicely atmospheric if a bit formless and meandering.

Wow, thanks for the Rautavaara nudge, Jules. This album for cello and piano is amazing.

Oooo, and four and a half hours of concertos. The violin concerto is starting off rather well.

He has a very distinctive style doesn't he ... Though to be honest I would find it quite difficult to express accurately in words. It's a curious blend, flirting with atonality but can be somewhat romantic at times.

2.45am and awake with a recently vaccinated somewhat sore arm. Some Penderecki a la Mutter will probably take my mind off it

In my never ending search for great recordings of Mozart's violin sonatas (it's so easy to be stodgy or glib in these works) right from the start this recording made me smile. Full of the light and life of the music.
I'd not heard of either performer before. Stephane Rougier violin. Sophie Teboul, piano. Bravo!
