Do you really not like the Symphony No. 1, Jerry? It's such a fun piece and very well written.

Ah well, Prokofiev's 1st symphony I class with Mahler 1st - early works that don't reflect what his mature style was like.
Must admit I find Prokofiev's effort a rather irritating pastiche of early classical style. I don't know what he was up to with that one, there must have been a reason for him taking that particular approach - I dare say I could look it up but as I'm not interested in the music I can't be bothered!
Mahler 1 stands in its own right as a great symphony but isolated from the rest of his music.
All just imo of course!

... well, I kind of intrigued myself about Prok's Classical symphony. Wiki, of course, provides good background. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_No._1_(Prokofiev)Seems like it was a blend of cocking a snoot at his music academy professors, and using it as a simple piece to practise his orchestral skills on, and providing a populist piece to boost his rep.

Both his and Mahler's first symphonies earn respect in my eyes. Marvellous and unique early creations.

What knucklenut thought of this idea? Mahler 10th completed and orchestrated for chamber ensemble.
Yes, it sounds as feeble as you'd imagine.

This is fun, big orchestral at times but light on its feet and delightfully tuneful.
Tomas Breton symphonies.

Bruckner symphony 5a - aka a full orchestration of his string quintet which was composed around the same time as the 5th.
This works really well, actually! An enthusiastic review in Fanfare put me on to it.

Playing it now. Beautiful recording, vivid and not just the bass drum. You can hear the acoustic very clearly.
