We were looking for new piano pieces for my son and came across this fabulous Toccata from Khachaturian - it has a fantastic modernist mid-century feel to it blended with romance. Yum.
I'll be checking out the rest of the album.

As per Jules' post, it's interesting to hear Khachaturian's piano music. He's kind of a melodic, tonal(ish), talented Prokofiev.

A Musical Offering was originally composed by Bach.

Solti's Bruckner usually works for me. This 5th is fantastic. I think he pretty much nails the tempi for each movement. And the Decca recording is beyond praise, which helps a lot!

The title of this album does it no favours, this is beautifully done. I suspect John would like it, too - defo in the modern classical category.

This is good so far. Only 8 hours 10 minutes to go. Ah - Sorabji. I have a CD of his music, in fact I think it's only a couple of pieces that fill the entire thing. Not a minimalist composer.

What a wonderful album. Sitting here with tears in my eyes listening to the sad beauty of the slow movement of Shostakovich' 2nd piano concerto. .... Martin's sad family news, a slowly dying cat on my lap. Ah well. Perked up a bit now with the 3rd movement.

Thank you, Jerry. That 2nd movement is one of the greatest pieces of piano music ever written. Thank you for reminding me of it, I shall play it tonight.
