Wow, I just love this recording. Latter day Goldberg Variations is how I think of it.

Hugo Wolf String Quartet in D minor. A rarely recorded work but I was fortunate to find a pristine condition Philips sample record dating from around 1956 Ah, curious. I've not come across the work before. I guess not being a fan of Lieder I hadn't paid much attention to Wolf. My error.
Listening to this on TIDAL now and it is very distinctive and interesting indeed! Thanks for the heads up.

Haydn: Symphonies 93 & 99. Sir Georg Solti/LPO. Sir Georg is wearing a rather fetching red trilby and matching shirt on the front cover.

Ketelbey - Not usually my kind of music but the recording is of demonstration quality, worth getting it for that alone.

Poulenc Sonatas - an unusual set from EMI that is quite beguiling.

A young Lorin Maazel conducting the Berlin Philharmonic in 1959 has given us a truly great recording of Brahms Symphony No 3

A young Lorin Maazel conducting the Berlin Philharmonic in 1959 has given us a truly great recording of Brahms Symphony No 3 Another interesting heads-up from friston! Tidal has this but in a rather poor sounding mono transfer. -- listening now to this 3rd (timings are near identical to the Berlin Phil performance), the stereo sound is much better, and it is a fine performance but he has lost a bit of fire and pep in the intervening 18 years --

Poulenc - Gloria and Organ Concerto, with the boy Durufle on the keys … The recording is ASD2835. The recording is a little too dry and forward for my taste but the music and performances are so compelling it doesn’t matter too much ….

#2 from ... Beautifully phrased and lush - but a bit drawn out and slow in places. and then 2 and 3 ... - superb! Tauter but no less emotional than Haitink. and some of #2 from ... Furtwangler. Cor, he didn't half yank it around. Sounds very contrived to me. Meh ... onwards! ... and then 2 from ... I enjoyed this even though I felt I shouldn't. Taut, a bit fast, lacking a tad in emotional depth, excitingly braying brass. Naughty but nice.
