-- the Penderecki string trio is a major find for me. Wowzer. And what a way to open a string trio of all things! Cataclysmic.

You say Penderecki and the picture says Janaki?

- wonderful - a golden oldie, they don't make 'em like this any more, sadly. for some reason I fancied some solo oboe this evening ... Some light and tuneful oboe sonatas

-- quartets 1-5. Early Mozart - but delightful light listening.

Yum, especially the Kancheli. Interesting. I've not heard Szell's cycle before. Precision playing by the Clevelanders. Interpretively cool, definitely not for Bernstein fans who prefer their Brahms on the lush and romantic side! I enjoyed both symphonies. Decent recording.

I've just listened to this ... Superb! I'll have to try 8 & 10 again, I wasn't impressed with Petrenko there a year or so back.

Penderecki is a strange composer for me. Much of his music can be just random noise as far as I am concerned, but now and then I come across a really great piece. A few days ago I stumbled on his String Trio and was bowled over. Today it's his piano concerto. Listened to this one 3 times on the trot ... then another time with this one ... Which is an even better performance and recording. Hey, even the flute concerto is good!

Penderecki is a "bridge too far" for me Jerry. I'm just about coping with this...

Penderecki is a "bridge too far" for me Jerry. You really should try the piano concerto, Paul - it's very accessible, no silly noises, and quite a few very tuneful passages! -- it makes me doubt it was actually written by Penderecki! And the string trio is also well worth a listen.
--- just pretend they aren't actually by Penderecki.

As recommended on the Wigwam forum for the Oration work. Listening now - more interesting than Isserlis with Hickox, but probably still comes under the heading of self-indulgent pompous meandering aimless twaddle as far as I am concerned. It's just a style of music that irritates the hell out of me. --- 10 minutes in now --- enough!! -- back to some Cherubini string quartets that the Oration so rudely interrupted

So, that's a (Frank) Bridge too far for you this time Jerry? I rather like that piece, in fact I'm listening to the Richard Hickox reading of it now. Of course, I am a sucker for cello, as long as there's a bit of melody to go with it.

..... as long as there's a bit of melody to go with it. Ah, well done. I couldn't find any.
Currently streaming some Haydn from this set ....
Lots of melodies.
