A seriously heavyweight performance of Vieuxtemps 4 by the estimable Ms Hilary Hahn. Great closeups that allow you to see her fabulous technique and agility on the fingerboard. Love all those delicate trills at the end of the 2nd and the high octane thrills at the start of the 3rd. Don't miss the sublime double Bach encores. A masterclass. my goodness, they play it like it's a masterwork - and I think they've convinced me that it is. She really is a wonderful violinist. Thanks, Jules

the sound in that YT vid was a bit rough some of the time, replaying the concerto now on the DG recording.

Good, I've not listened to it yet, will have to be a headphone job - do let me know how the performance compares!
I'm a big fan of HH now, especially after listening to numerous interviews with her. Just such a shame that with the exception of her Bach, there isn't much to interest me in her discography.

That's quite some intro, longer it seems than the Beethoven. Not a piece I knew at all, but it's very impressive. Thanks, Jules.

Thanks, Jules Interesting comparing Hahn with Perlman. Hahn takes it seriously, Perlman trivialises it and plays it as if it was a Paganini violin concerto aided and abetted by conductor Barenboim. Now I understand why I haven't taken Vieuxtemps seriously up till now, no one else has until Hahn/Jarvi came along.

a rather astonishing performance of the Bruch VC by Hilary Hahn, with a very spirited orchestral accompaniment as well

I love the Bruch went it isn't over sentimentalised - some just lay it on a bit too thick ..
Will check it out later, thanks J.

Just finished the Bruch.
Absolutely spellbinding, the polar opposite of enforced sentimentality. Look at the way she tears into the opening movement but then so much poise and elegance when required. That sequence of arpeggios around 6 mins and then the orchestra pick up the baton with the same energy.
Never played with anything less than 100% commitment - her confidence in her technical ability to play on the limit with such flawless intonation really is quite wonderful. And I love the way she so clearly feels the music.
Oh, and she uses 'cheap' Dominant strings.
I have nothing but admiration for Hilary Hahn, the way she plays and the way she conducts herself.

That opening movement is really well played.
I heard Benedetti play it in concert and she is also very good.

Yes I would imagine she would give a good account of it.
I've been disappointed by performances at the Proms by Joshua Bell and Pinchas Zukerman.
Thankfully Esther Yoo absolutely nailed it at Cadogan Hall back in 2018.
