Playing this CD as I type ... Seriously impressed! -- big scale, dynamic, tuneful, romantic, upbeat & lively -- what's not to like?

CD CD Argerich in the D minopr concerto (#20) is astonishing - although it has to be said that she plays it more like Beethoven than Mozart!

Different performance, Martin - the one I have is with her long time pianist/conductor partner Rabinovitch.
I've no idea what the Abbado one is like.

Extremely beautiful Bach transcriptions by Wilhelm Kempff, played by his star pupil Idil Biret. There is a gentle luminosity here, and throughout much of the disc, which is entrancing. Kempff's own compositions (a suite and a piano sonata) are good - the Italian suite seems very much influenced by the 20thC French manner to me! - think Ravel, Debussy in their gentler moods. The sonata is a bit more percussive, but still tuneful. A lovely CD for chilling out to. Not songs at all - all instrumental music. Accessible non-romantic, somewhat atonal 20C American - some interesting sonorities, the music has a definite fascination for me.

Mahler Symphony No. 8 - Tilson Thomas, San Francisco SO
I compared this with the great Solti/Decca recording. Wonderful sumptuous recording, great dynamic range, clean peaks. That's about it. The Solti, rough as the recording may be, has the scale, the soloists and the sheer greatness behind him and remains my favourite.

Karl Davydov - Cello concerti 1,2,3,& 4 Wen-Sinn Yang / Terke Mikkelsen / Latvian National Symphony Orchestra. Interesting - not come across this composer before. Seems to be known as Carl Davidoff on the cpo label and Karl Davidov on Alto with the Davidov Symphony Orchestra, no less! Just translitreration differences from the Russian, I guess.
The Alto recording is cheaper - so I'll investigate that - concertos 1 & 2 - thanks for the heads-up, Slinger.
--- not a million miles away in time and place from Paul Juon - have you ever investigated, Slinger? Really good!

Do you have any recommendation for Mahler 1st in the same or similar sound quality? I have Ivan Fisher from CCS, but the sound of that album is little bit lifeless and dry, vs. for instance its 4th from the same label. For 5th I found Jansons RCO Live recording my favorite.
