A Telemann vocal afternoon ... CD CD A much underrated composer, imo.

CD -- I do often like Britten's non-vocal music. These quartets are excellent - Shostyesque! CD -- I tried this (again) - great until the vocals start - the way Britten gets the soloists to sing in a weird declamatory style is a big turn-off for me - makes my skin crawl. I gave up after less than 10 minutes - it's now up for sale on eBay! Sometimes you just have to say 'enough' !! LP .... ahhh, that's more like it. My Britten's Requiem-tortured soul is healed by Beethoven.

LP ... the Ave Verum Corpus is amazing, very much in the sound world of the Requiem. I've not heard it before. (AVC - K618, Requiem K626 ) CD -- my favourite pianist strides magnificently through the 2nd concerto. What power, what finesse!

Who plays the Piano Concertos in the Shossy, Jerry?

Previn in #1, Bernstein in #2. Curiously, imo Bernstein is the better pianist. _____ LP -- Magnificent recording and pianism. CD -- interesting Beethoven-precursor CD -- I do like Barenboim's way with Mozart - sprightly but not too fast, and weighty where required.

Hah - that's the problem with them both being conductors, I was misled!

Just received this today and you're right, it's good. Very good indeed. Piano as a proper percussion instrument.

Glad you enjoy the Haydn, Martin.
Take a listen to Lill's Brahms piano concertos as well - tremendously powerful playing, I doubt that the piano survived the experience! ----
Today, so far ....
-- an obscure but excellent CD!
CD -- interesting interpretation of Schubert 9 to hear once, but it's now on my <for sale> pile!

Think I prefer the offerings of his less-well-known brother, Egbert.
Never asked before, but what's with the duck fetish, Jerry?

Ducks are cool - what have you got against ducks?
--- I think I explained it once on AOS. Long story - quite boring.
But ducks are cute anyway. I like ducks.

CD --- this one, but on CD not LP! --- I must confess to a huge sense of ennui with the Mendelssohn concerto, I just can't be bothered with it anymore! - but the Tchaikovsky is magnificent here! The 2nd concerto from this CD - wonderful
