Hi Jules, yes I enjoyed Campoli's rendition - he kind of goes for it, the opening violin 'ascent' passage is quite surprising! - and Pritchard's conducting is taut and exciting, too. I shall have to look out for Campoli's Tchaik.

The Campoli / Tchai to go for Jerry is the re-release on Decca SPA183. It still has the reference sound quality of the original but you won't need a second mortgage to buy it!

Ah well -- I'll just see what comes along in charity shops!

I am generally averse to orchestral mono recordings but the last 2 of the above were greatly enjoyed, perhaps largely due to the excellent condition of the LPs as well as superb performances.

Wowzer! What a recording! My BWV582 of choice remains the Stokowski transcription with the Czech Phil, though. Stokie just draws out all the inner voices so lucidly in a triumphant spine tingling peroration!
My Desert Island disc.

LP Excellent - I much prefer Igor Oistrakh to his more famous dad, David, on the violin. Igor has soul! CD What a fine piece of music - doesn't raise the rafters like Verdi's Requiem, or explore the nether regions of emotional depth like Mozart's - but still just nice to listen to!

CD LP LP ... probably my fave version of the Brahms VC, the jewel-like precision and clarity of Ferras' playing bowls me over every time. LP

Wowzer! What a recording!
I love all the Michael Murray Telarc recordings. The Davies Symphony Hall recording of various pieces is superb.

LP LP -- hmm, not keen. The youthful Rattle rather pulls it around, little accelerandos leading up to the exciting bits etc ... and overall a bit fast for me. Too excitable, the music is magnificent enough without yanking it around to highlight the 'good bits'. CD

Kuerti's Schubert sonatas are world class, imo, but while his Beethoven is good it doesn't quite make it up there with the best. Ah - now we are cooking with charcoal! The Op 101 (#28) in Lill's hands is superb. Oddly, and despite the better known and more illustrious competition from legendary pianists past and present, if I had to pick just one Beethoven piano sonata cycle to take to my desert island I think it would be Lill on ASV. He has a leonine power and majesty that bowls me over every time - it's how I imagine Beethoven himself would have played them.

CD LP LP ... amazing coincidence. I picked this up yesterday in a charity shop (6 mint LPs for £3 ) after listening to a CD from the set the previous day! Chuffed to say the least.

Interesting music, pinch! I have several discs of Ciurlionis - really good! What's the Ma Sicong like? .edit: wow, good review on Amazon, so I've invested some of my hard earned gold. ____ CD ... a rather distracting cover, but it's culture so that's alright - wonderful music! CD LP

Playing as I type .... LP Mono from the mid-50s ? maybe? Orchestra sounds a bit scrawny, but the cello is captured superbly, real vibrancy! Hey, Old Slava (RIP) couldn't half play!

Interesting music, pinch! I have several discs of Ciurlionis - really good! What's the Ma Sicong like? It's lovely, I think - I've not been so keen on the symphonic work I've heard, but his chamber music is certainly my cup of tea

CD Lovely pellucid bell-like tone Lill gets from his piano on this recording, almost like a dulcimer at times. Beautiful. ... and it's available for 1p + postage from Amazon.
