I'm looking to upgrade my CD transport, and I've read many and various reports on using a DVD player as a CD transport.
Some of the older Japanese higher end players are good value now, and some cope well with SACD as well, but not from the digital output.
Something like the Denon DVD-3910, or DVD-2900 is available at the £50 mark these days, what does the panel think ?
Id like SACD facility, but it's not imperative.

Which CDT are you using at present. I was using an NEC CDR602 CD rom reader (uses caddys) but now I use a home made one using a computer DVD drive and a display unit (chinese off ebay) built into a small form computer case. Output is SPDIF. I also have several CD players, the best being my first ever purchase, a Yamaha CDX-810. It was in the loft for many years but now does duty in my second system. The DAC is a home built unit with an AK4393 board and my own power supply.

I've just remembered that somewhere I have a Samsung HD950 DVD player that plays SACD discs. Must try and find where I've hidden it and give it a workout in the main system.
It might be in the loft, bet it's hot up there.

Recently plumbed in my Oppo 103d Bluray player as a CD transport. Don't play many disks nowadays, but into the Dac as a transport it sounds great. Does SACD and DVD-A too. Used to have a Pioneer 575 dvd player years ago, did SACD too. Great sound played through a dac. Killed it though when I tried to update the firmware...ah well. See if you can track down one of these, the Stable Platter jobbies are good transports too.

I've got a Sony BD player that plays SACD (never tried this facility tho') and couldn't tell the difference between this and a Pioneer DV717 (which were all the rage elsewhere) when used as transports through a BM dac. Worth a try braving the loft I reckon.

I'd say have a poke about on eBay for a Pioneer PD-S505 Precision CD player (that's the Tom Evans tweaked model). With a good DAC it makes a lovely sounding transport. I use one and it sounds as musical as my Meridian players. You should get a PD-S505P for about £100.

I use a Sony Blue Ray player supposed to do SACD. Through a DAC very decent Cheaper than the Oppo and just as good as a CD transport (I had both in my system and could not hear any difference)

Bulletproof Meridian CD transports go quite cheap nowadays too? Well loved examples come up on forum classifieds quite often.
With a lot of folk going the server route a good time to buy.

I owned a Pioneer DV737 for a short while and my Arcam CD72 CDP wiped its bum, put a nappy on it and packed it down to sleep in its box.... I also had a mates Pioneer stable platter machine here for servicing a little while back and that is a different animal entirely. Through my Rega DAC it was no great shakes but playing via it's analogue outputs into my system it whooped the Arcams embarrassed behind...

My PD-S901 is hors de combat but I got a PD-7700 for £29 on eBay and it sounds terrific through its analogue output as Dave says. I only have a cheap DAC for the Mac and it only has USB input so I have no idea what the 7700 sounds like otherwise.

Here is my DIY CD player without its cover.
Small PC chassis, perfect for such a build. I used to work at NEC when we first started selling CD-ROM drives. They all had caddies then, a right pain unless you had plenty of spare ones.

I've been doing a lot of internet searching, and it seems Denon have lots of problems with draw opening and disc reading on most of the battleship build models that were in my price range.
Seems those on ebay with that fault " only need a new drive belt " according to their owners.

I read that some of the Pioneer dv series have had problems with the disc drawer sticking.
