Something like the Denon DVD-3910, or DVD-2900 is available at the £50 mark these days, what does the panel think ? The 2900 has a great reputation. If you can really get one for £50, bite their hand off! Bought one 3 years ago for £80 from a dealer. Great for SACD and DVDA. TEAC VRDS easily beats it for CD.

The Teac VRDS certainly has a very good reputation, but I've read they are not immune to breaking.
Why is it with ebay, when you want something, and there are several likely candidates on offer, the one you really want is the last auction to finish ?
Or is it just me ?

With me, the one I want either doesn't work properly (as in the case of the Technics SL-P1200 I bought) or is withdrawn suddenly and with no good reason.

Or is it just me ? One of my VRDS machines is broken but I have some spare parts - probably will try and get it fixed by an expert rather than have a go myself. The Denon has a slight draw stick when closing but a light finger on the draw activates it. Could be sticky rail but think it is positioning in opening slightly too far. (Belt a possibility)

There's always another coming along on Ebay. Could be even better than *the* one

How does a Pioneer PD-s 705 stack up in the grand scheme ?

Very well I'd say
Model up from the 703
Sounds good with just analogue out, stupidly good for the 2nd hand price. Stick on a DAC, then a battery PSU and it is more than stupidly good

Has anyone here got any views on using the Sony PS1 SCPH-1002 as a CD transport ?

Has anyone here got any views on using the Sony PS1 SCPH-1002 as a CD transport ? I've got one coming now off Ebay (£15) and found an article on how to extract the SPDIF signal. I always fancied a top loader so I'll see how things go. Won't be with me for about 7 days though.

Top loaders are great as long as you have shelf height or can put it on the top step.
My Rega Isis spent some months sharing 2 shelf spaces on the Mana rack and was not the easiest thing to access.

I'm using a Rega Apollo R as a transport. It's a bit flaky sometimes but sounds good, especially for the money and is only half-width.

My PS1 is working now, thanks to a PS2 DVD remote control and IR receiver. This plugs into front port 1 and gives me very basic control, but it works.
It's in my office system at the moment, and sounds quite good, not bad for £20 so far.
Tomorrow I will try it in the main system.

I took the plunge this morning to do the SPDIF out conversion. The two legs on the chip that needed lifting responded to the tip of a scalpel, no heat needed - YIPEE. Got the other wires in place and 3 resistors no problem. Biggest headache was finding a spot for the RCA phono socket, but an intricate alloy bracket and some bodgery on the plastic case soon sorted that out. So, it actually works on SPDIF through the DAC. Must admit the initial appraisal is not as euphonic a sound as before, but perhaps more accurate. More listening required.

I've given up with the modified Playstation 1.
The sound has something I liked, but ultimately was pants.
So, now I'm using a Cambridge Audio DVD57 which cost me £13.
Seems they were regarded as poo by some, but version 3 was said to be improved. Mine is "revision C" so should be the one.
So far I'm really liking the sound of it with the Beresford Bushmaster DAC and it's new 14v power supply.

If you can run the bushmaster of a battery or better still a lithium power bank

The DAC came with a battery pack, but the charger went tits up.
To be honest I prefer it with the 14v regulated PSU.

That's good to hear, Philip. How much difference did changing the transport only make?

No no the PS1 isn't a transport it's only been respected for analogue playback with the right mods. No wonder it sounded pants on SPDIF duties.
