As a dyed in the wall ‘stat lover I am thinking of another pair (will be my 6th) - this time the Quad 2905. My issue is my room / lounge. Its about 20’ x 13’ which would be fine but for the awful layout of doors, furniture and alcoves etc. My current set up, with much narrower Final ‘stats, is firing across the room width but within the confines of a shallow 10’ wide recess. Given the width of the Quads I could only achieve about 1.4m between their inside edges. I would also stuggle to get them more than 70cm from the wall behind them (acoustic panels are in place behind the ‘stats which help). See my gallery entry for an idea - ‘digital and stats’.
Am i doomed to failure ?

It's hard to say, and may also depend on whether the volume levels will remain fairly low as it'll be a near-field experience.
How do the Finals sound and what improvements are you expecting? I find the 2905s a bit Marmite - when they're cooking with the right music in the right room, they can sound superb. I've also heard them sound flat and sat-upon in different rooms.

Hmmmmm, whilst not ideal I would not say that you doomed to make them work, as an aside If you could stretch to the later 2912's they are IMHO an audible evolution on the 2905's.
Would it be feasable to arrange a dealer demo in your home that may answer your question before splashing any cash.

Finals do sound good. However i am keen to try a full range stat (or at least nearly, the Finals roll off rapidly below 170Hz or so) without the use of separate woofers. In other words to improve overall coherence. Also curious as to how Quad’s point source delay.ine panels affect 3D imaging. I have hear them playing small scale classical in a large room and they wete stunning. Also heard them at a Hifi Wigwam event where they sounded a bit flat playing more rock oriented stuff. Ive been measuring typical listening levels here - for the most part they peak in the high eighties dB with occasional jaunts a few dB higher, which the Quads should manage. Hmmmmm

The 2905s would be second hand, no way could I afford 2912s (although i could consider the transformer / cap upgrades to the 2905 in future). What made the 2912 that much better ?

Quad performed a few tweeks to the 2905 circuit and utilized some better quality componants resulting in improved power handling and a slight but percievable improvment in toneality and weight to the presentation, they also made a few improvments to the frame and bracing resulting in a more sure footed aural presentation esp at high dB.
I owned 2905's and briefly 2912's before going to Martin Logan CLX Anniversary.

Well, didn’t (quite) win the auction so looks like I will have to wait a little longer anyway.

Odd, Google HiFiShark and search for Quad 2905, a couple apparently available in the UK.

Used to have Maggie 2.5r - great speakers. But not quite the resolution of ‘stats. I’ve not heard the later 3.6 and 3.7s mind . . .

Well, a pair of 2905s are winging their way to me this afternoon. Will need to spend some time deciding a) whether I still need to keep my corner woofers for the bottom octave and b) resetting the room correction software to suit. Will post back impressions running them on the end of a digital system shortly. One thing is for sure - they play plenty loud enough for me. If I want my trousers flapped I’ll just buy some PA speakers for Black Sabbath (showing my age 😎 Lovely morning in the Quantock borders listening to them and having a spot of lunch . . Sometimes life can be so hard !

Enjoy your 2905s. What woofers do you have?
Having had a day of moving topsoil in the garden, with a perfect blue sky and the birds twittering, I'm going for a listen now.

Lyngdorf W210 corner passive units, each with two opposing lightweight 10” drivers. TBH I have a feeling I am not going to need them with the Quads. Anyway, one 2905 in situ, other on its way later (two car trips tequired).

Oooooh, these are NICE 🙂 Whoever said Quads don’t. Do bass ? Compated to £20k Magicos and Wilsons maybe but there’s plenty enough for me. In fact tomorrow I’ll set about tweaking speaker placement and use the Lyngdorf’s room correction to sort out some room induced bloat. And they go plenty loud enough too.
Whilst I’m here I do have one small problem - one of the Quad logos does not illuminate which I presume is a dead bulb (yes I have twiddled the knob at the rear). Anyone know if its an easy fix and how I get to the bulb ?
More later .. . . I’ve a nice 18 yr old Glenlivet getting too warm. . .

Two months in, room correction done and placement finalised and the 2905 s will be staying a while. If anything the bass seems a little more extended than initially (perhaps the membranes need a while to acclimatise to a new environment. No, I dont get the feel in my chest of a kick drum being struck but the linearity of the bass compensates. I could reinsert my woofers into the mix but think it would detract from overall coherency and besides, the room space is getting too cluttered. Just need more space ! Sure, they could do with being another foot away from the wall behind them I think (just 2’6” with wall diffusers behind on the walls) and a couple of feet further apart (just 6’ between inside edges currently) with me sat 8-9’ feet away. They seem to reach a magical spot on the volume scale where things just fall into place so much better (corresponds to about 2-3 watts average signal which probably means peaks of up to 40 or 50w) and low to mid 90s dB on peaks. Its all I need. Never a hint of compression or the protection circuit being tripped. Sadly, replacing the failed neon bulb means dismantling much of the loudspeaker (what a stupid design) but has no effect on the sound. If ever we manage to move somewhere with more space i may consider the transformer upgrade and get the neon replaced then. In the meantime Qobuz continues to supply me with a constant stream of new music to explore. I did consider moving from LMS as my music server to Audirvana (who advertise native Qobuz support) but, sadly, it still doesn’t allow playlist management via their Ipad app, so may as well stick with LMS for now.
