Any JBL 4429 owners here, or anybody heard them?
I’ve had active speakers for about 10 years now, but like the idea of the large driver and horn arrangement.
Cheers Matt

I had Isobariks for many years and loved the bass and oomph they delivered. Twin bass drivers seemed close to unbeatable. A 6 pack active system was where I was heading, when I was still wearing Naim glasses. Lost those when I heard a Chord power amp outperform a Naim 500.
The TAD E1s I have now don't look as if they could deliver anything like what I hear. Bit far to pop over for a couple of hours but if you were ever passing......

I've heard 4429s, they have that kind of easy delivery that big JBLs do so well. I really like them. I used to have JBL L-100Ts and they were good but not on the same scale. The Everests are mighty impressive.

Every time I have heard a good system with JBL speakers in it, there has been that unforced, take it in it's stride sound that Martin describes - What? Make m-u-s-i-c? Yeah, I can do that, no problem. Here you go! I'll take it over the Tannoy sound (for example) in a moment.

I have to admit, I’ve not heard much really good Hifi. I heard PMC BB5 XBD-A’s, Wilson watt puppy’s and some big Lumley(I think) speakers at a show and B&W N801’s in a shop. Ended up buying N803’s then PMC IB1’s, then went active with ATC scm50asl’s then PA65’s. I now have some Digidesign RM2’s that I’ve put SB Acoustics drivers into and built an 18inch sub.

As an owner of two pairs of JBL 150's, one pair I bought new in 1981, with Klipschorns and big Usher Dancers in between; I would say the 4429 are good but small. More suitable for near-field monitoring, but looking at your list of speakers there is a thread of studio monitors, what is your application ?
On my edit suite I'm using Adam A7X's which would give many a mid-range HiFi systems a fright, but this again is near-field.
There are some great active speakers especially the domestic ATC's.

Hi Dave, This is my Hifi setup in my living room which is also connected to the tv, so see’s as much peppa pig as music these days. I listen to mainly electronic music, but listen to things like Dire straits and Bob Marley too. I like the speed and precision of studio monitors but also aim to create life like spl’s and physical bass. My room is about 4 x 4.5m and I’m around 2.8m from the speakers. I think once I build a second sub and crossover them higher than my single sub setup, I hope I will achieve the big 3 way speaker sound, I’m almost there now with 1 sub. There’s an ease to the presentation of large speakers that’s addictive

OK, in my experience small/mid size studio monitors don't do "physical" bass. I really don't think the 4429's will do either as they use the big bass unit to gain efficiency and speed, not low frequency bass.
As the Americans say "there is no substitute for cubic inches" Have a look at the Klipsch R-28F Reference reviewed in this months HiFi World. Those and a proper 100W amplifier might be for you ? YMMV !

Thanks Dave, they look good. My only problem is that my DIY sub measures just shy of 600mm each way. I plan on building a second one and units to hide the subs and gain storage, but this would also mean I couldn’t use stands or floor standing speakers(it will make more sense when I post my system pics). I plan to build concrete counter tops to form the lid of the units and sit my speakers on top.
Cheers Matt

Ah ! If the subs will do all the LF work then your mains may not need "physical" bass ? In which case the 4429's would be OK. It depends on how much power you have individually for all 4 speakers and what SPL you actually want ? Or just go the 28F route and no subs ?
EDIT : Assume you are using an active crossover and separate sub amplifiers ?

I would probably use a hypex power amp if I went the passive route again, or possibly a Lab Gruppen power amp as these have dsp. My sub is fed off 1ch of a behringer inuke6000dsp, so it has somewhere between 1200 and 1800 Watts. My bass goes down to 7hz then rolls off below that. I don’t think I could live without a sub as I search out music with really deep bass to feed the bass habit

I think you are all set to go then ?
Out of interest can you tell us about your sub please ?

Hi Dave I built a curved sided cabinet from 25mm mdf with a 50mm front baffle. Driver is a Dayton Audio UM18-22. I’ll post some pics of the build in my system thread. theaudiostandard.net/thread/4064/matts-systemNot sure how to get the images to show, rather than links as using Flickr on the iPhone. Cheers Matt

Mark at AoS used to use Lab Gruppen amps with a frightening array of bass drivers to good effect.

Yes, sealed box. It’s a bit rough and ready. I’m an electrician, so carpentry isn’t my forte. When I build the second sub I will dismantle this one and sand and fill it before painting it.
