Currently I use one of these, from Blok furniture. It's served me very well for the last 7 years and the service from them are good. I outgrew it some time ago. I plan to move to monoblocks sometime in the future and it just won't work for the box count. A wood-worker visited me this evening ( here's his page) to finalise the dimensions for the bespoke rack I've commissioned. It'll essentially look like this and it'll going to be wide enough for 3 full width components, and high enough to accommodate isolation platforms (which will be 70mm thick). One key difference between this and the 'hi-fi racks' brand is that the legs will be mortice and tenon, so very strong. The aspect I'm deliberating over is the material; he can get all sorts, but the two at the front of my mind are: 1. American Rock Maple: from research this is meant to sound excellent and 2. Blackwood: I've no idea how well this performs, but it's gorgeous looking (a lot of the product on his homepage is made of this) Depending on which material I pick, it'll weigh from 140 to 280 KGs.

The Stereophonic stands look really good, EXCEPT... how do you hide the inevitable mass of wires at the back (I think any stand looks a bit naff if you can see the wiring) I'd prefer to see some sort of backplate to hide them.

Fair enough; I personally think that if cables are dressed properly (I'm OCD enough to do this), they can enhance the look of the system. If you don't like it, your suggestion isn't a bad one (again, if you can be arsed to implement it).

Isolation seems to be the way to go to get the best sound. For the kit on the rack RDC cones great VFM. Latest Black Ravioli even better. RDC cones on the feet could be good if you can't mount on springy things

Yes I have been amazed by how much difference RDC cones, original Black Ravioli, original Stillpoints and Granite place mats have made to my system. The latest Black Ravioli is even better still, but currently outside of my budget.

RDC mainly here;
RDC 2 > Combi bases
Under all isolation platforms and some components. Need some more for the new platforms as it goes.
Has anyone tried their metal spikes into cub combination?

Yes, the Combi bases are good. RDC 4s better. Less VFM though
Not seen the metal spike RDCs on Ebay yet Certainly an interesting concept with RDC and spikes

Yes. The price put me off. That's why I was waiting for them to show up on Ebay

Are those spiky things like decouples? It depends on how (and the context) you use them, I think.

Got the drawings submitted to the cabinet maker and made the initial payment. Delivery expected mid March. Will get you some pics when it’s done.

@jules that was essentially the design I was going for originally. But I got advice from two seperate (and trustworthy) sources that’s spiking between tiers like that impacts the sound negatively.
I know there’s a lot of experimentation required to get it right (as everyone’s situation is different) when it comes to coupling / isolating equipment, but I chose to go for a solid unit, with isolation platforms in the end.
The platforms will all have RDC cones, cups and Combi bases to support them.

That's interesting, not come across that before. At the moment I'm using an Atacama Equinox which uses five spiked tiers as pictured below - it's very practical. My previous rack had solid tiers but I can't comment on whether that would have sounded better as my equipment was totally different back then ...

I don't like spikes, far preferring RDC or similar lossy isolation.

Me neither and I’m not saying it’s gospel; just wanted to share what I’d heard from others. It’s a tough one because unless you borrow a rack to demo and set up your whole system (properly - for a fairer experiment) you (as in anyone) may never know the difference - if indeed there is one. I think that’s part of why I enjoy this hobby so much, there’s lots to learn and even more to consider. This is a double edged sword for me as I find myself overanalysing things way too much.
