This month I offer for your listening edification an all-star Bach Brandenburg set, with Sir Neville Marriner. First thing to say is that this recording is not what you would call 'fashionable' in that it is not a HIP performance - 'historically informed performance', on period instruments that seeks to be as authentic and faithful to the original work as possible. But when the playing is this good and the recording so sumptuous, I really don't care. There is all manner of virtuosity on display here, a quite superb line-up of musicians led by the estimable Henryk Szeryng on violin ... If you enjoy this performance it's always an interesting exercise to compare it with a HIP version just to show how entirely different two performances and interpretations can be. Available on cd and vinyl, the vinyl comes in a lovely box set and the sound quality is absolutely first rate - I was lucky enough to find a sealed box recently ...

Thanks, Jules. Marriner and the ASMF very rarely did any wrong, so I'm looking forward to this.

Now this is the type of classical music that I really like. I have already listened to it once and find myself enjoying listening to it a second time. Great album, 5/5.

That's great news, I'm delighted that you are enjoying it Paul! A quick note that the cd contains some bonuses after the Brandys finish at track 18.

Marriner delivers it so well and Bach is the master. 5/5 (yes, I do score perfection very occasionally).

Sir Nev giving us what is one of Bach's, if not one of classical music as a whole's, most familiar and loved pieces. It was never going to be anything but great, was it? I'm trying to find a reason not to score this as "Bachtastic" and I can't. 5 From me.

Still here.
3rd full run through and trying to work out my thoughts.....
This system does it proud. Maybe this is a 'classical' system

I think your system will sound great with any good recordings Mike, whatever the genre. I can assure you there are also many classical recordings not in the same league as this one.

Surprises me how there is so much space, the instruments are separated and distinguishable from each other I've only heard classical before as a wall of sound. Well made for sure.

Absolutely. Baroque music played with smaller ensembles where you will get more of that air and separation. Later classical music with much bigger orchestras more difficult to record where you might experience that 'wall of sound' you mention. Can be thrilling when done well though.

The system may be the key for me to unlock classical

OK Mr Music - c'mon give us your thoughts, spill the beans! And I don't mind if you don't give it a 5 ...

I have a couple of these, not sure if it's Marriner as I've not looked through my 500 or so classical CDs since putting them in storage many years ago. I have yet to rip my classical collection as well . . . note to self! I must admit to not being a massive Bach fan, likewise Mozart, but I'll give this a bash, it will make a change to Steven Wilson

Great, play nice and loud Tim, it's a superb recording I am a monster Bach fan but only have one Mozart lp in my entire collection - the Requiem. The rest I am happy to do without.

I'll listen to it on my HD650s nice and loud then. I have most all of Mozart, despite not being a huge fan. I do like the higher number piano concerto's though and the Requiem is a must have. I'm more into big orchestral works, Bruckner, Mahler, Shostakovich and Sibelius being my top favourites. I must get my collection ripped, hardly play any classical these days. One thing that has always put me off, is I have yet to decide on a correct naming convention when I rip them to FLAC - this is a common problem, oft debated and no-one seems to agree. Who'd have thought it eh, music lovers/audiophiles who don't agree on things, how very odd!

I’ve always struggled a bit with Bach and most Baroque music, I kind of feel it’s too sophisticated for me and always conjures up images of genteel men in tights and wigs twirling around with ladies. I like a bit more grunt, being the heathen that I am. I’ve listened to the Brandenburg Concertos several times in the past, but I don’t think I’ve heard this version before.
Having said all that, Sir Neville makes some fine recordings and this is no exception, probably a very worthy rendition if you like Bach. I didn’t dislike it, but it’s not something I’d choose to listen to if I was feeling in a classical mood. A bit too twee for my tastes.
It did make me feel ‘posh’ for a while though and I would score it 3.5/5 – but as I can’t do that, I’ll give it a 4 because of the faultless recording. It does sound superb quality wise through my Senny HD650s.
