Have you ever wondered what The Moody Blues would sound like covering Kraftwerk? Tangerine Dream's version of The Model on this album might give you a vague idea. Some tracks remind me of Depeche Mode, others remind me of...well...I'm not really sure who they remind me of but I'm betting that the majority of people have never heard Tangerine Dream sounding anything like they do on this album. Under Cover – Chapter One is the 120th album by Tangerine Dream, which was released in December 2010. The idea for the album is said to have started in 2008 in Los Angeles. The band was touring in the west coast area at the time, and their promoter jokingly told the band they should cover top 40 hits. It grew into a bet and then a full-blown concept, after careful consideration from the band. A buzz about the album started to circulate in the early autumn, and it was then made available for pre-order in November of 2010. I don't think every track works 100% but there's nothing on the album I actively dislike and there's more than enough good stuff (I love the guitar on Hotel California) to make it a fine album in my book. There are some brave choices of songs to cover and you have to admit that, if nothing else, it's a genuine oddity, space or otherwise. You will be singing along, and be honest, you never thought you'd be doing that to a Tangerine Dream album, did you? Tangerine Dream, for this album, is... - Producer, Keyboards, Engineer, Backing Vocals – Edgar Froese
- Flute, Keyboards, Backing Vocals – Linda Spa
- Guitar – Bernhard Beibl
- Keyboards, Drums, Backing Vocals – Thorsten Quaeschning
- Percussion, Drums, Backing Vocals – Iris Camaa
- Vocals - Chris Hausl (tracks: 1 to 7, 9 to 11)
- Vocals - Thorsten Quaeschning (tracks: 8, 12 to 14)

I just can't... From the 90's onwards, so much of their stuff was just awful to me and despite the hero-worship of Edgar Froese (rip) in fandom, he didn't arf do some real crap of the finest order imo... Now he's gone, I wondered if it was actually his widow's need to milk the reputation dry that kept the band going and even his son wasn't keen on the band continuing, but it seems that I may be mistaken as the new album has been well received (I'm on a buying ban right now). In any case, TeeDee in this form was never to my taste whatever they recorded, sorry Slinger

Don't think of it as a Tangs album if that helps, just a very odd covers album.

What a fantastically strange album! I'm a TD fan and I'm sampling it already without giving it a proper listen right now. You're right about The Model, Moody Blues indeed! Wicked Games sounds more like some producer's idea of a weird mix.
It's still recognisably them, but extremely odd. Will give it a full listen tomorrow.

I like this even more today, it's really as you might expect it to sound - an amalgam of songs we know but with that trademark TD sound. Still, nonetheless, surprising. Wicked indeed, 4/5.

I've just read a post that says "...(ever tried foot tapping to Tangerine Dream or Delius?)." You might like to rethink one of those examples after listening to this album, Martin. Actually, on reflection, you could probably 'tap' along to Delius' March Caprice too, and parts of Hiawatha.

Not an album I am at all familiar with so looking forward to giving it a go. Tangerine Dream are one of those bands that I can take or leave so it'll be interesting how I get on with it.

Track 1 is a cracker, needs wide bandwidth to fully appreciate.

Despite being a good album (I think) for Tangerine Dream fans I'd probably have to say that it's also definitely the Tangerine Dream album for people who don't like Tangerine Dream.

Hah! Most people would simply NOT BELIEVE that what they're hearing is Tangerine Dream.

Listening at the moment and remembered why I have never really liked Tangerine Dream, I am no fan of the lead singers voice. The first track on this album though, is very good, the louder the better.

So I really didn't want to like this because of the lead singers voice, but by gosh it's really good, I am struggling to find a reason not to order it!
Great choice, Paul.
4/5 - it would have been a 5 but for that voice!

If the scoring had been less granular I'd have given it 9/10

Wow. Thanks very much for this. Currently mesmerized by Precious. For the record I've never heard of Tangerine dream or most of the songs being covered here. This is really beautiful and just sends my mind soaring. In a way, somewhat, the song reminds me of Depeche Mode - Policy of Truth. But this has its own appeal for sure.
Another plus is the song here by Kraftwerk, not to my liking, but has led me to seek out other songs of theirs, two of which sounded very nice from the album Radioactive.
Nice rendition of Wicked Game.
Cannot score album yet, but will do so when I spend considerable more time with this.

Just had a proper listen , first off they picked some fantastic songs , can't get my head around what the idea was though , I wish they had been a bit more TD about it. Moody Blues yes but even they would have been a bit more adventurous , far too Smooth Radio for me . For the choice of tracks 9/10 for the rendition 4/10 which equates to Wish You Were Somewhere Else .

Nope!
I'll give it a bash after Bach Slinger, I have kind of avoided it to be honest, as I'm not mad on compilations and cover compilations is an even harder reach . . .
You never know though?

Oh my giddy aunt . . . “Sometimes everything is wrong” Really sorry Paul, dreadful, I had to listen to Michael Bubble and Beyoncé at a B&W/CHORD demo this week, but this was worse. Disliked it from the off and it got progressively worse. There’s Auto-Tune in here which I’m averse to, so that didn’t help. The Depeche Mode cover was . . . . . and if I’d have had a shotgun handy when Space Oddity came on, the neighbours would have been calling the police! Probably the worst thing I’ve heard in as long as I can remember, butchery of the highest order of some great songs. I only kept going out of morbid fascination to see if the level of carnage could increase, thinking it can’t - I was wrong. Not the TD album for people who like TD and I do/did, rethinking that. Bit like a 99p Woolies MFP record from the 70s. -10/5Haha, all good fun though, but please don’t do this again . . .
