Tastes good though. Sorry, I just don't get the appeal of vege burgers and sausages etc. I've always assumed them to be some sort of "bridge" food. I don't believe them to be designed for dedicated vegans/vegetarians but more for the veg-curious. Let's face it, more people are probably likely to try a vegetarian sausage or burger, than exactly the same stuff presented as just stuff. Omnivores are more comfortable with food shapes and names that they can easily recognise. Once they've been hooked and reeled in you can sell them slabs of tofu and tell them to get on with it. Give these a try, Paul. They are really tasty and the most enjoyable meat alternative item I have found in the last 33 years. The slices, likewise. They even get a good review from meat eaters: They cost £2 for 2, or there abouts.

I shall have a butcher's hook on Mister Sainsbury's site, Stephen.

The local Asda used to have them, and the slices, but stopped stocking them. They seem to be widely available, if not local, as in my case now. Pity.

Sainsbury's have them, along with quite a lot of other Quorn products. A quick count shows 39 different Quorn-brand products; there are even three "ready meals." I'm drawing the line at Quorn Vegan Breaded (or battered) Fishless Fillets, though. It must be a right bugger of a job, filleting fungus.

To be honest, the steak pies and slices are the only Quorn items I would buy repeatedly. Well, the pieces are ok in a curry.

I quite like Quorn burgers, sometimes served at work.

I'm not so keen on Quorn. Can eat it
Linda McCartney stuff good and Tesco own brand surprisingly good. The newly added Plant Chef seems good too although at least one is a re brand from Tesco's own
There are also others in the Tesco range I am trying out

The Vesta meals from the 70s are still going. Haven't had one in decades. Used to like the Chow Mein and doing the chrispy noodles. The curry uses TVP - Textured Vegetable Protein. Should get one to try. In the 80s there was a product called Cold Cuts which too was TVP and came in a tin which you sliced; there was beef and chicken. Liked the beef in sandwiches. Was really disappointed when it became unavailable. Amazing to see how veganism has gone from oddball - to mainstream big business.

I used to love the Vesta Chow Mein, and burning cooking the noodles. I seem to remember the Cold Cuts too, but probably wouldn't have without your mention of them.

I remember those Vesta meals well. The Chow Mein was the best of them.

I had both the vegan potato salad from Sainsbury's, and their vegan coleslaw tonight. I also had some nice little Ricotta stuffed cherry peppers I probably shouldn't mention the hunk of Gala Pie though.

Veal, Ham and egg. No probably not! Renamed in the late 70s as the quantities of the ingredients did not match the description. More like egg, Ham, pastry and Veal!

It's "cured pork" these days, Pete. No sign of any veal. I love the pastry as much as any of it, but like most things it doesn't taste like it used to.

The commercial ones used to be made with the worlds longest eggs! - I worked for a company that made them and other pies etc back in the late 70s.

I've just planned my meals for next week and I've managed to sort out 7 vegan or vegetarian main meals, including the fake-steak pies that Stephen suggested.
