I have been going through some repairs and servicing to a bit of my kit lately. My OPPO BDP-83 hd the belts fail and so would not open or close. I sen this back to OPPO Digital in Norwich and after ten days it is on it's way back to me with new belts, a lens clean, service and firmware upgrade. The cost of this, including next day courier? £21.60 inc VAT. I'm really impressed with this, they even apologised for taking so long I'll keep you posted on the repair, but I would think the distributors would get it right. Next up is a company called Fuselodge Ltd. of Acton Lane, in Acton, London. My Pioneer CT-S610 is getting on and belts were going, the powerd loading door was sticking, it would not rewind etc. Took this in to the three old school engineers who run this place, they stripped it right down, cleaned it, repalaced all belts, re assembled and then re aligned the machine. This coast me £70.00 and on getting it home it is perfect, got some old test tapes out and it is better than it was when new. They also rebuilt the complete power supply of a MF P-140 power amp and sorted a Sharp Mini Disc recorder for me for £70. These chaps are amazing and the shop is full of thousands of spare parts for obsolete machines. Great blokes and I would recommend them wholeheartedly. Any one else know anybody good for servicing and repairs?

I can throw in four I've used more than once and been very happy with:
1. Arkless Electronics. Jez is a great bloke and really knows his stuff. He turns repairs around very quickly and won't take a penny up front. The things he has repaired for me and mates have been faultless long-term. Jez also builds bespoke stuff. He was chief design engineer for both Musical Fidelity and Alchemist, so he has a great track record.
2. The Maughan Amplifier company/MAC Electronics. Mr Maughan Snr runs the former and his son (Michael) the latter. Whilst initially specialising in making and repairing valve stuff, they have repaired many high end solid state Amps for myself and friends. They successfully sorted a pair of Levinson monoblocks that the official repairer had failed to fettle over several months. They also have the best valve testing eqipuipment here is and they can even service Nakamichi tape decks. A number of dealers use their services for this.
3. Wembley Loudspeakers. They fix voice coils, roll surrounds and even do re-coning. They sorted rubbing drivers for peanuts too. You sometimes wait a bit due to demand for their services, but they are real experts and very inexpensive to boot. Between mates and myself, we must have used them over 20 times and every one has been perfect.
4. Elite Powder Coatings: They have powder coated a number of cases and faceplates for me, as well as speaker stands. They powder coat all the stuff for Custom Design and are a pleasure to deal with. Their work is done quickly, cheaply and perfectly. The service is genuine and first class too. One of the nicest firms I have ever come across. They don't just do black either: Any colour and any finish. Top notch.

If, and only if, you can accept the attitude and the many forum reports of unresponsiveness and long delays in getting things done. It's only fair to give our members due warning and proceed with caution.

That hasn't been my experience, Martin. Or of friends who have used his services. I think the well-documented issues Jez had are very much in the past. He has never failed to answer a call or respond to a text. The longest he's taken to fix anything for anyone is is two days.
As for the attitude, I can only say it's not there when you deal with him on a pesonal level. Sure, he has his opinions but they are conveyed in a friendly, non-combative way.

That's fine, Andrew, and members can make their own minds up based on what has been posted here.

If you are a Rega, Linn, Naim owner, Class A have a very good reputation and have very fair prices for servicing kit, they did a particularly good job when servicing my Dad's Naim equipment and are significantly cheaper than Naim themselves, good turnaround times and excellent customer service.

What about cartridge rebuild/retip? Has anyone got any personal experiences they want to share? I've read so many varying reports elsewhere.

the thing is Doc that equipment is not that old, You seem to have a lot of issues id expect from a 20 year old item.

I used Expert Stylus in the past to re-tip an AT OC9 and they did a fine job. I'm not sure if they are still in business?

Aprt from the OPPO which is about 7 years old and the belts on the loading tray is a known fault. The rest is all about 20 years old and has been used. I started this thread to try and flag up a good honest company and one that gives good customer service and you seem to want to carp at this. Personally I try not to comment and "Thread crap" unless I have something useful to say.

That MAC electronics seem good. I've an amp that was fettled by them and it's excellent.
There's a couple of guys up this way that are good : Ones a Polish lad who comes to you and fixes bits n bobs then and there which is handy and there's another fellow called Nuno who runs a specialist repair shop about 40 miles from me. Look up NB Audio in Cupar to get an idea.
Eduardowobblechops is also pretty nifty with a soldering iron too!

More like you dont wanna hear it Not a question of me not wanting to hear anything. I started a thread that I thought might provide a good resource for forum members. You come along with your normal "Antsy" attitude, make some inaccurate observations and thread crap. I suppose the old observation is true "no good deed goes unpunished". I think you have a bit of a problem mate.

Getting back on track - if you go to a dealer and are quoted an hourly rate for work, what are you prepared to pay?
