This Album Choice was selected by rfan8312.Chad Wackerman - Dreams, Nightmares and Improvisations (2012) I chose this album from drummer Chad Wackerman because of how well recorded it is and also because of how cohesive the album is in it's sound throughout the tracks, aside from the first track called Glass Lullaby which I would have preferred to be excluded from the album entirely. For me this album starts at "A New Day". I found this album after purchasing PSB-M4u2 and Grado 325e headphones. I set out on Spotify looking for songs with good instrument separation so that I could hear what these headphones could do for the individual instruments they were reproducing. The genre fusion-jazz is where I found most of the material that interested me and that led me to most of the groups and musicians I listen to daily. Anyway, to me this album is criminally underrated. There's no vocals but IMO, for what they were going for here, that would have over-complicated it all and diluted the vision. This sound made of drums, bass guitar, keyboards and Allan Holdsworth's Synth-Axe feels like the perfect and complete execution of a vision. If I could compose songs with a group this would be a huge inspiration for me. Wiki:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreams_Nightmares_and_ImprovisationsSpotify:

Wackerman is a Zappa band alumni, but that doesn't make him a bad person! He also posesses the best drummer surname ever.

Apart from the first track I am liking this. However I think most will struggle with it

Really sorry but this is just not for me at all. I actively needed to turn it off after a while.

Sorry Robert, this is not my sort of music at all, in fact I had to turn it off because I disliked it so much. I have given it 2/10 purely because the instrumentals are quite impressive.

Well I got through it , didn't like it but then didn't hate it , I wonder how you choose a name for any particular track bit like abstract art I suppose , throw a tin of paint at a wall and call it Odin's Revenge . Bit more to it where music is concerned of course , very clever stuff all this and well performed and recorded 5/10.

I made it through to track 5 and gave it a 5. I think it's good background music but not something I could sit down to listen to and not do anything else ... Very well played of course, especially the drums and bass ...

Wow thanks very much guys. No worries. In fact until now this is the first acknowledgement I've had that this album even though exists. I've never had a single discussion about this and a few other favorites, that's how under the radar they are.
But with quality of production and I interesting moments I had to give it a mention.
To me this isn't the type of music I ever sit and listen to. In fact I never sit and listen to anything, yet, it's always while cleaning the house, in the shower, or driving. In those cases albums like this can wow me.
I'd love to try album choice again I have a couple more items I'd like to post that are bit more exciting and engaging.
I will say this though if you ever get some amazing gear, tracks from this album.choice, tracks like:
Star Gazing Bent Bayou Brain Funk A New Day
These may really make that system WOW you in how good it can sound even if just for a brief skimming through.

Spill then, Tim. Is it for you? Well I did listen to it all the way through, taking the advice to discount the first track as that is . . . well lets leave it there eh! Anyhoots, not something I would normally listen to despite liking contemporary jazz and the old classics. Reminded me a lot of Weather Report in places. What I did like and it's what pulled me through to the end, was the bass playing and a lot of the drumming. If you replaced the electronic keys with a piano I would have enjoyed it a lot more. What I didn't like and never have since the days of Weather Report and Chick Corea, is the keyboard work like for example The Bellows 3min in. This to my taste is pretty dire and just sounds so amateur and there's a lot of it throughout the record. Of it's time I guess, but I never got into it when it was of it's time. It does sound very much like a Hi-Fi demo recording and I don't have a lot of time for those either, I like listening to music not Hi-Fi. Despite all that is deserves 5/10 for the standard of musicianship and the great bass lines, which I really enjoyed. But it's not my type of music, give me Tord Gustavsen or EST any day, or Coleman Hawkins there's so many Jazz records I would reach for before this. Always good to learn something new though, so thanks for challenging us

I ended up giving it 5. I want to like but it's just a little too discordant for me. In the right mood it could work for me but mostly I'd find it irritating.

I had another listen to that, in case I was being harsh. It sounds like the incidental music to one of those old fashioned trip videos with the over-sharpened images. I gave it 2/10 and I'll stick to that on the basis that I'll never listen to it again. I agree that the keyboards ruin it.
