First this month The Buggles' Age of Plastic received a mixed but overall quite positive reception, so now (as the saying goes) for something completely different. Loreena McKennitt. Canadian singer / songwriter. Goes in for the Celtic / New Age / folky sort of stuff with a strong whiff of the Middle East thrown in for good measure. I like it a lot. About 35 (?) years ago Absolute Sounds used the track 'The lady of Shalott' in their Hifi Show dems, which is where I first heard it. Immediately after the Show I scurried along to HMV Oxford St and bought the album. Becoming rather besotted by the lady's talents, I have all her albums. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loreena_McKennittAnd, no, I don't think she is very much like Enya at all. I can also totally recommend her DVD set "Nights from the Alhambra" concert video. Stunning, visually and musically.

It was released in 1991, Jerry, so the dates don't add up. It is a really good album, but it's a long time since I last heard it, so I'll give it another couple of plays before I give it a score.

And, no, I don't think she is very much like Enya at all. I would totally agree.

I understand the Enya comparison, and I agree with you, Jerry. No she doesn't sound much like Enya. However, to the great unwashed, the similarity that they're both female singers (duh ), and their recordings make much use of great big washes of reverberated sound. I'm not that fond of Enya's recordings to be honest, yet I do like Loreena's stylings.

****** Oops - my apologies to mikeyb. I inadvertently nicked his September (2) slot. In the Classical Album Choice section where I normally reside, you get allocated the whole month and I usually post a few choices during the period when it's my slot. Obviously things are rather busier in this section! Mike will return to you in November. ******

Nice choice, Jerry, I have got it, although I found it a grower album that took me a little time to appreciate. Not sure about the Enya reference, I don't see it myself.

Yep, she's a slow burner for me, too. I have another of her albums. Will give this one a good listen.

It has been very nice listening to this album, which is one of those that I enjoy but rarely listen to and as I said above was a bit of a slow burner.
Think I shall give it a 4/5, my rational is that if it were a 5/5 I'd likely be playing it more, but that is the only reason for giving it a 4.

Not had a chance to listen to Jerry's choice yet, I'll add it to my offline Spotify library before the flight home tomorrow 😥

Mind you, Mike, your next Album Choice should be a veritable novel after all that time to reflect!

Never heard of her which is not a surprise as I have mentioned before I don't listen to female artists . When I saw Celtic in Jerry's post I thought brilliant I love Irish folk , but you can tell she is not Irish , its just not there , the edge , Irish-ness , she has a marvellous voice but a bit too faultless , too pure. I checked out some other songs in her back catalogue , well one to be precise because I just knew she'd do it "She moved through the fair" ,and this just nailed what I thought of her. Anyway back to the album very nice , the odd song thrown in a compilation excellent , all together a bit too much for me . Excellent recording and musicianship . 7/10 which I've computed to 4/5

Overall she gets a 4/5 from me. Good songs, well performed. Perhaps a bit too pure for me.

When I saw Celtic in Jerry's post I thought brilliant I love Irish folk , but you can tell she is not Irish Why do people equate Celtic with Irish Folk? There were Celts in Scotland too, and those are the roots in which Loreena McKennitt's music is steeped.
