When I saw Celtic in Jerry's post I thought brilliant I love Irish folk , but you can tell she is not Irish Why do people equate Celtic with Irish Folk? There were Celts in Scotland too, and those are the roots in which Loreena McKennitt's music is steeped. I personally don't know any other Celtic music but Irish , I'm ignorant of Scottish folk music , on her first album Elementary of the 9 traditional songs two are English and seven are Irish , one does have Scottish lyrics though.

It's not just Irish / Scottish - the Celts were all over the place. Including the middle east, and that influence is very strong in LM's music. Just watch the concert video Nights at the Alhambra to see an amazing array of middle eastern instruments.

Which is also why The Corrs playing Jimi Hendrix' Little Wing sounds just right - the blues is derived from African vocal music, which had also been touched by Middle Eastern music. There have been Arabs trading and slaving in Africa for many centuries. The big thing they share is pentatonic scales, microtones, and a common sense of time division.

There were Celts in Scotland too, and those are the roots in which Loreena McKennitt's music is steeped. +1 Welsh Celts too Chris, in fact being half Irish and half Welsh if would consider the Scots more Celtic than me. I most certainly would not consider a Celt exclusively Irish. Funny too, that despite my heritage I dislike most 'traditional' Celtic folk music, especially penny whistle Irish folk music - "way hay and up she rises, early in the morning" . . . yikes. Having said all that I think Loreena McKennitt is a great musician with a unique style, I wish I liked her as the eastern twist to her music is captivating, but something just doesn't work for me. A bit like Richard Thompson, I can't connect there either. Funny old chestnut music tastes.

Cornish Celts have more in common with Breton Celts than with other Celtic groups in The British Isles. The most common mistake people have is to think of Celtic as being one group.
There are commonalities between the groups, but they're all separate tribes. There is no singular Celtic culture.

Don't know exactly. The voice is about my least favourite instrument. Some male vocals I don't like either.
There are vocals I do like a lot, even some females ! Mavis Staples, Mimi from Low, all the vocalists in Kokomo. Currently listening to Huey Lewis (!) and very happy with his voice

Similar to my dislike of xylophones as is sometimes used in 60s jazz.

Mike, perhaps it's the tone of a female vocalist? How do you find this song by Tanita Tikaram, for instance? She has quite a deep register.

Hmm. Not at all bad. Worth investigation. In the main I don't like female vocals that sound like young girls If you like your ladies to whistle and the wonderful DC10 Perhaps I do like female vocals

Well a well produced album with a wide selection of different styles. Not bad but not outstanding I find the high pitched vocals a bit to much for me too I think over the years I become more sensitive to this A 3 for me
