First thing to say is that I bought the Mazda first and foremost as a practical family car. It's not for thrill-seekers! But it does what I need superbly. The combination of performance and economy is perfect. My father in law has an old 2 litre Mazda 6 that gives him around 35mpg - he thought that was great when he bought it! My Mazda 3 gives me 53mpg and it's also a fair bit quicker than the old 2 litre engines but I never push it hard. I'm one of those guys who are slow to accelerate from traffic lights and I'm always driving as relaxed as possible. Next thing is reliability. I bought it used (2016 model) at the start of the pandemic in 2019 and has done just under 50k miles. The only significant work has been new brake pads and rear shocks - the latter was due to me severely underestimating a nasty London speed bump! Literally the only thing I can criticise in the car is the very mediocre sound system which I wish I could upgrade. The central sat nav / settings screen looks very low tech compared to today's but I hardly ever use it so don't care in the least. Since I bought my 3 there has been a new UK model which is highly regarded with minor improvements over mine. Not sure there's anything else I could add - it just does the job very well!

I wondered
"The Mazda3 is based on the Ford global C1 platform, shared with the latest European Ford Focus and Volvo S40.
I rate the Focus highly

I believe Mazda used that Ford platform around 2003-2008. Certainly by the end of gen 2 it was gone.
I never drove a Focus but always heard it was very good to drive. Build quality has always let Ford down IMO.

Build quality has always let Ford down IMO. That has always been their bugbear. When I had company Escorts they seemed designed to fail in the 13th month (just after warranty expiry). Luckily, it wasn't me paying the sometimes large bills for repair. The Mondeo seems to have been their first car with a strong quality element. I've also driven a Focus which was fine.

Wow Jules thanks. Makes me love this car even more.
And Mike mentioned the Ford Global C1 platform, which I had no clue about, but have gone down a rabbit hole with this abd it's fascinating. Tbh though I still have two to find evidence that north American cars from 2007 did in fact recieve the c1 platform.

It's worth checking. I know that the Honda Civics in North America and Europe were different cars.

Very interested to see what Matt, High Peak Autos on YouTube was having as his next car.
Getting rid of his Range Rover at last. Be interesting to see what....
Another Range Rover !?
Like to hear what he says about various motors but his obsession with a highly flawed motor is crazy

Anyone who thinks buying a Range Rover is a good idea is no kind of expert.
Unreliable, expensive, brick-shaped junk that infests the outside lane of motorways.

They are so uninsurable that RR/LR have a direct insurance click button on their website to 'ease' you into the purchase

Was driven in one these last week, interesting experiance, however for that outlay (almost) you could plump for new dcs Varese' or a half decent place in Portugal
Unfortunately my neighbour (bless him, real shame he is a really nice chap, just seriously misguided) has literally just turned up with one of the new RR sports about 4.30pm this afternoon, I've had a bet with Anne how long it takes for the recovery van turns up in the next 2 months or how long it stays in his possession

How about a Volvo V90-, Mike. You'd probably get all the dogs in the back. Or a nice Audi Q6?

Noooo, not the Audi. Those Q-cars are larger than small buses and almost as irritating as the Range Rovers by forever getting in the way.
Don't be one of those people!
