Today though the front brake pads and discs needed changing, as did rear shock coils. Ouch - just as well I was sitting down, I felt a bit queasy for a while ... Sympathy, Jules. Driving high mileage as I do, the only way you can deal with these costs is to anticipate and save towards them. I service mine twice a year, get through tyres once a year and there's wear and tear, like brake pads and discs, which hit just when you don't need them. I put aside £300/mo for the car, excluding fuel.

Sorry to hear it Jules.
This Gen 2 Mazda3 has ruined me for regular point A to B commuting. But one thing it has taught me is to start saving now for unexpected repairs, which is something I never have done before.
Within days of buying this car I was left stranded multiple times because of a bad starter, bad clutch, flywheel needed resurfacing. Over here they wont change the pads without changing the rotor discs as well so it's always going to be about $300. Not an easy pill to swallow.

Over here they wont change the pads without changing the rotor discs as well so it's always going to be about $300. That's completely unnecessary. Discs last a lot longer than one set of pads, although autos wear them a lot faster than manuals.

Good grief. I haven't had to spend any money on my Mazda 3 in the 3.5 years I have owned it, beyond the yearly service. Today though the front brake pads and discs needed changing, as did rear shock coils. Ouch - just as well I was sitting down, I felt a bit queasy for a while ... Running costs Lot less than a new one !

Point made by Matt at High Peak Autos (YouTube)
Anyone buying a second hand car has to be aware it *will* cost to keep going He backs away from any buyer who is struggling just to buy a car from him as he knows it will come back

Back to getting my car detailed at TKDetailing in Basingstoke, I was very pleasantly surprised to receive the quote today, for just £2,000 all in. This includes:
- Removal of front bumper, respray, PPF film protection, refit - Chip repairs - Full colour correction and polishing - Interior restoration - Engine cleaning - Wheel refurbishment
That's a comprehensive package to get my car looking like new again.

So going backwards to the RX-7 and not calling it RX-9? Very nice, and with a twin rotor will be as smooth as silk.
365bhp will do very nicely in a car of that weight. You'll still have to rev the nuts off it!

You can never go wrong with an MX-5, great little sports car. I only ever drove a Mk.I and it handled like a go-kart, nimble and great fun.

The photo doesn't do it justice. It's shinier than when it was brand new. The paintwork looks great and the refurbished wheels look brand new. Everything is ceramic coated and the front bumper is PPS protected. The engine bay is impeccable and the interior nicely restored, including the leather seats. Even the exhaust tips are highly polished. Kudos to TKDetailing of Basingstoke.

Devastatingly beautiful car. If that appearance is due to the work they did then they did a great job.

Actually Martin I think I am with you.
When you find something you like take care of it.
I am on my 9th year from new with my Porsche Boxster and I cannot find an excuse not to look after it versus buying a new one.
I also like giving money to local businesses who can let me look after it at way less than the wanky £180/hr my dealer asked for a couple of years ago.
Fuck off, basically.
What I am saying is I believe that when Porsche cars come out of the factory brand new they are excellent.
However, don't look to a Porsche dealer for support when your car is more than three years old.

In the same way, I haven't used Subaru servicing for the last two years now. I have all my work done at Abbey Motorsport because they have modified it and look after it well, with the best parts, oil etc. that money can buy. It's a bit of a trek but I have coffee there and chat with the guys who know so much about cars and racing.
I also get my tyres at ProTyre down the road in Micheldever. They know a thing or two about tyres and I won't have any Kwik-Fit type organisation anywhere near my car.
We've compared cars with hi-fi before, and I have a similar approach to both: modify at will, take care of it and use only specialists who know what they're doing.
