I am well impressed with Monkey Shoulder!
£27 for a very skilfully blended Scotch from three single malts is excellent value. It's not immensely promising on the nose with a slightly medicinal whiff of citrus fruits. Thankfully this isn't an extreme case like The Dalmore. On the palate though it's all good - these citrus fruits are very brightly presented with a nutty finish which isn't overwhelming in the least. It actually borders on the refreshing and makes a lovely aperitif ... For everyday drinking I would be more than happy to keep one 'in stock'.

OK guys anyone been trying some new whiskies?? There are plenty of festive offers in supermarkets at the moment to get stuck in with. I’ve just bought Glenlivet 15 yr old French Oak Reserve at Waitrose reduced from £40 to £30. At £30 it is good value. The first time I tried it I thought it was very ordinary indeed however since then it has opened up and I’ve really started to enjoy it. On the palette it is fairly rich with the usual spicy toffee and caramel notes; I don't detect any of the nuttiness that the box refers to but not a problem . The finish isn’t the longest in the world but it has a lovely lingering pear / grapefruit note to keep things interesting … Overall it is a totally harmonious and most pleasant dram which I shall continue to enjoy.

This might be worth watching if you like whisky. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b07zk5cx/episodes/playerI was born in Dufftown and one of my long dead relatives was the man who created the original Glenfiddich whisky recipe. So it was good to see all the places around where I grew up on Episode 2, and where my grandparents lived until their passing. Funnily enough I don't like whisky myself and my grandad gave it up when he accidentally spilled some high proof straight from the barrel onto the bosses desk and it stripped the veneer, that was back in the day when the workers carried a full flask of tea into work in the morning and it was still full on the way home but this time with the Angels' Share

Tonight I'm polishing off a bottle of Bruichladdich that I was very kindly given for Xmas ... The blurb on the bottle tells you that this has all the right credentials to be a top-notch dram - non-chill filtered / colouring free / distilled with Islay water / 100% Scottish barley / unpeated These credentials are impressive and whilst it is good, and a whisky you should probably try, would I buy one myself again? Probably not. The overriding characteristic of this whisky is its maritime nature which in this case I find interesting but not compelling. It does taste uber pure, and 'craft' distilled, but for me it's a whisky to respect rather than to wax lyrical over - I don't find myself really pining for another one.

The bottle looks like it was designed by a hairdresser.

I finished off a rather nice bottle of talisker last night, my Christmas present from my sister Generally I'm an islay fan. I had a bottle of blended a few years called big Pete, it was blended from islay whiskies and was very nice

Aberfeldy 12 yoI *really* don't like this at all! Currently on sale at Waitrose and I can see why. Very thin body, almost medicinal tasting - slightly nutty, like Monkey Shoulder but a fraction of the quality.

Ok it turns out I was a bit harsh on Aberfeldy. It’s not that bad, on the other hand, it’s not that great and certainly wouldn’t buy another one with the world of whisky at my fingertips. And here’s another I won’t be buying again. This Glenfiddich Solera 15 is matured in sherry, bourbon and new oak casks and appears competitively priced at under 40 quid. A totally different style to the 12, this is darker, richer and spicier, with the obvious sherry influence. Certainly smooth, with a somewhat creamy texture. The trouble is that it’s also a little restrained on flavour and complexity for a 15 yr old and feels slightly underpowered at only 40%. I’m also not impressed by the rather obvious added colouring.

I've got unopened Glenfiddichs, never really liked them much. Still enjoying the 12 year old Balvenie Doublewood.

I've got unopened Glenfiddichs, never really liked them much. Still enjoying the 12 year old Balvenie Doublewood. I used to find Glenfiddich rather 'rough and ready'. I do like The Glenlivet, but my all time favourite is Laphroag. Unfortunately for health reasons I can't drink any of them them anymore.

I really liked the Glenlivet 15 I had a few months ago ...
Whisky has become my main drink now as I have virtually given up red wine - just a couple of glasses can give me a migraine that lasts for days ... All very strange!

I've got unopened Glenfiddichs, never really liked them much. Still enjoying the 12 year old Balvenie Doublewood. Glenfiddich is the biggest selling malt whisky I believe. I like it very much as it has a slightly toffee sweetness and a nice sophistication to the flavours. If you aren't going to drink your bottles, I'll pay the postage up North .
