Certainly not in 1-2 years, but 20 may be pushing it!
Ruth's speciality is being given a bottle of Champagne and then forgetting about it for years. They don't seem to put a year on them. We've opened two recently that were almost flat and came out thick and dark like sherry!

We've opened two recently that were almost flat and came out thick and dark like sherry! Champagne should be OK for 3 - 4 years. A Vintage Champagne can be good for 20+ years but 5 - 10 years is probably a decent guideline. That's all supposing it's stored somewhere cool and dark of course, with a constant temperature - ideally around 55 o F or lower with 70% humidity, so not in the kitchen A small(ish) wine fridge costs around £100.00 Short-term you can even store it standing up, long-term it should be on its side. You probably knew all that anyway, but it's always worth repeating.

Yep, we store them on their sides but the wine rack is in the Utility Room so gets hot during the summer months. I think the bottles we opened were around 15 years old and not temperature controlled.

Whisky shouldn’t be kept on its side if you’ve got proper corks in the bottle, as the whisky will break this down and apparently it tastes foul.
Also, it should be kept out of direct sunlight.
If unopened it should be okay for many (30+) years.
After all, some are left in casks for a lot longer!

I’ve been naughty.
Knowing that I’m returning to the UK, I’ve sent a few bottles from the Whisky Exchange to my sister to look after until then,
I’ve gone on a Ben Nevis hunt and got:
2x official 10 year old cask strength
1x Douglas Laing 18 year old cask strength Sherry cask
And, the big one:
1x Signatory 27 year old cask strength sherry cask
I can’t wait to try these out. But I will, until August 2021!

Ben Nevis is good, I tried a few during tasting on their distillery tour. The blended is remarkably fine, too.

What a fantastic haul - cask strength, sherry finish, it's all good!
I have nothing more exotic than Jameson and coke to drink at the moment. Amazon have been doing it for 18 quid a bottle.
I will treat myself to a nice sherried whisky for Xmas though ...

Ahh...sherried nectar. It Glendronach for me, Revival 15 yr and Allardice 18 yr. I've a bottle of each waiting for the really cold weather and roaring fire.

Just bought my Xmas whisky treat - this interesting edition of Glengoyne. Un-chillfiltered and matured in first fill Oloroso casks, hopefully a bit of a sherry monster. Reduced to 39 quid from 55 on Amazon Prime.

I believe that's very well regarded by Roy Duff Jules. My palate is pretty much 100% aligned with his, so it should be something I'd enjoy too. Sláinte.
I bought an Ardbeg Uigeadail, GlenAllachie 12YO and Tomatin Legacy this week. 60 bottles in the cabinet, 27 open - that'll do for quite sometime now I reckon

Thanks Tim!
I wouldn't be able to keep that many bottles unopened ...

I drink it only occasionally (but I think I'll have a wee dram tonight).

Don't keep so many open. Once a bottle gets to half full/empty the flavour starts to weaken. A wine saver should alleviate the issue.

I'm all over that Clive, the result of some blind tasting sessions and folk wanting to try them - it's not the norm, in fact quite the opposite. But we are only talking a few months, nothings been opened for longer than 3/4 months.
The core are just neck pours. About 6 are low and these will get drunk first, a couple more are cheap blends for mixing and non whisky drinkers (they don't know!). Normally I try to only have half a dozen or so open, but they don't hang around long enough to get tainted. A bottle lasting long once opened ain't a regular occurrence around these parts and nothing new is getting popped until those are gone - apart from the cheapo blends.
It is my guilty pleasure after all, in fact I'm off to pour a wee dram now. I've a Craigellachie that'll go bottoms up tonight, so just 26 tomorrow.
See, this retired lark is a serious business

Sounds great Tim, get drinking! I'm close to my 2nd retirement. I retired for 14 months and then couldn't turn down an offer. A few more months...
