Yesterday i went to pick up a used car from a dealer for the wife. The car had been transferred from Wales to where we live. On arrival to pick it up, the wife saw it & fell in love straight away, off she goes for a test drive, over the moon she was. So in we goes to do the deed, after all the usual BS they try selling you on top [Which i always refuse]. Before i actually paid for it gets told of this Vehicle Admin fee of £82 on top! + because i was paying cash via my credit card it was also down to pay a fee for doing so around £11. If i had not paid these she would not have got the car & i would have felt rotten, so just for her i commenced & paid. Now im secretly boiling over while i am paying this, fuming i was because i hate dealers of any sort anyway. but what the boss says goes Is there anything i can do because the Admin fee was never mentioned in the add & i find it strange getting charged for using my card!

The admin fee sounds like a scam and you should have been given the all-in price to pay (including VAT, which is another irritant when not told up front).
The credit card fee is quite common, I'm afraid. It's because they get charged extra for payment by cc, so they're just passing it on.

Walking out the door often makes fees go away

Audi had an admin fee on both the cars we bought from them recently. It does seem a liberty to me!

Walking out the door often makes fees go away It certainly works, but like karney, if my wife wants something I get it for her, makes my life easier

Walking out is part of the negotiation. Let the wife know in advance if neccessary

It's a bit like the booking fee when buying tickets online. Err, a fee for what exactly?

Debit cards now attract a large fee for the dealer. An admin fee is quite usual now, it's in the small print. If you like the car then be happy !

There is no small print on an Advert.

Agreed, but neither is it usually mentioned in the advert that prices are negotiable. Are you happy with the car ?

Does anybody have the brains to haggle with these people! Insist they eat charges as part of the deal and be prepared to walk away. If you swallow that you probably paid over the odds for the car in the first place. When I bought a new car a few years ago I used a debit card and no charges! Do they expect cash? I doubt it. Actually they appear to like people to buy on credit or lease as they make more money out of it.

Not sure brains has anything to do with it. I always haggle when I buy things, but I know for instance my wife doesn't like to.
The charges mentioned by Karney are usually non-negotiable, you could walk away but you will only find another dealer adding the same charges, so you could get to a point where you don't buy anything!

Did not pay over the odds & i did haggle but the price was concrete apparently This specific car, at the mega low mileage for the year & the fact it was Automatic together making it a car that is thin on the ground at that price hence the transfer from another city was a good price.
The amazing thing is they phoned this morning trying to sell more B/S cover, However he really could not understand when i said 'yew blew it when you took the piss with the Fees & charges' & need to consider disguising it within the price in the future to avoid people saying na forget it.

This rip off highlights the way society has gone and is going further.
Here's the price (now there are other little things we will add to that as we are dishonest, greedy scum) One of the answers is to ask what the total bill comes to. In some cases even that won't be enough. We just have to be so diligent to spot these scams

I hate price creep. It happens a lot and I do as you do and ask for the final price, which is the one I will hold them to.
A common annoyance on the business side is to quote prices ex VAT. Many small businesses and all charities are not VAT registered so an ex VAT price is meaningless as it is not what you pay.

When I ran my own company VAT was irrelevant as we were registered.
As a private individual, or an organisation that cannot claim back VAT has to be shown. Must be clear as a minimum. I found a way for some of our non registered customers to legally avoid VAT. Made my a happy bunny. VAT items become zero if we ship abroad direct for the UK org. Doubt many share my interest and the add ones have become a lucrative area for scum

Just gets better.Took the car into a dealer to have some reverse sensors fitted. Job done the Mrs drove it back home. I come to washing the car Sunday, i noticed the the middle two sensors are not level, one is 1/4" Higher than the other, Ive bought a Bumper protector that has a slight lip, this fitted makes them stand out even more.. The sensors have been colour matched in a different shade to the car & now the Wife says they aint even working when reverse parking!
As far as im concerned the Bumper now needs changing. They have clearly not measured before drilling the holes. There is no point getting the sensors to work when im not happy about the bumper situation, am i in my rights to demand a new bumper?
