Yes, there is an optional remote. The rear panel on mine even has a mains socket, but no gubbins internally.
This one just came along conveniently in the Wigwam classifieds so I thought I'd give one a go. Definitely a success.

I like the look of the Hattor mini - it can be specced to run as a passive or active, remote control and different resistor options which start bumping up the price considerably.

I very nearly bought the Hattor passive. There's also a Hattor valve stage so you could run it in passive or active modes.
I was going to buy both. Then never did.
I think it'd be a really nice combo to own.

Hmm. The Mrs has suggested I should buy something expensive. An amp for a few grand comes to mind, but I've no real idea what.
Any suggestions?
Used would be best given my boxswap tendencies.

Excellent! I'm going to see if my Mrs will follow suit.

Stupid question #67 - should an active buffer go before or after a passive preamp? MartinT

After. You want the passive to present a decent load then have it drive the buffer into the power amp. That's the way to get best quality and matches my setup (except that I use digital volume from the DAC).

Thanks Martin, I'd pretty much figured that out by the time you replied!
I'd been getting vaguely concerned that the system wasn't displaying its usual dynamic abilities - and was starting to worry that the Holo DAC wasn't all I'd hoped. Then I thought "Passive preamps, that's what they do! It's that damn Khozmo."
Happily I had an active buffer that Jez Arkless made me when we were both on AOS. Plumbed that in betwixt Khozmo pre and power amp... and the scale and heft have returned. Yay.

Having pondered amplification for a while, and taken steps to arrange a dem of a Neurochrome 686 power amp (thanks Oli!) I was feeling increasingly dubious about heading down the 'accuracy uber alles' road. The problem is I love my Primaluna Prologue 5 power amp too much - and no-one is going to persuade me that it is a straight wire with gain, but by golly it plays music. So I did a last ditch Google search, and gadzooks, you could have knocked me over with an octet of KT88s, these turned up. Primaluna Prologue 7 monoblocks. All paid for and hoping to get them Friday.

I think you may have found some keepers Jerry Yes, I have a suspicion you might be right. I've had the Prologue 5 well over a year and other amps have come, stayed a while and then been sold on. I keep coming back to the 5. The high source impedance measured by John Atkinson in the Stereophile review will provide noticeable speaker-dependant tonal variations. I obviously like the ones that the Prologue 5 produces! Maybe they cancel out room resonances.

And, just in time for the warmer weather! Yes, that's a possible downside. Hopefully my room is big enough that doubling the heat output won't be a problem. Here's hoping for a cool English summer! I'll keep a solid state amp or two as backup in case of a heatwave.
