There's undoubtedly a lot going for the 501. It's got a magnificent sense of scale and spaciousness - listening to Vaughan Williams 5th symphony atm, Wow! And a fruity tonality in the mids that's very appealing.
I've given up on the Ixos digital cables working with it, too explicit. Now using Cable Talk digital cable ; a significantly smoother and more rounded experience but still lots of detail and a great sense of space. I've not given up on the Teac by any means.

Well, this particular nag has trotted off to the classifieds! System as was ... Hmm, well, the Quad 306 has been on my Want List for over a decade, ever since I wandered into a small dem room at a Hifi Show to be stopped in my tracks by a very vibrant and entrancing sound. I can't recall anything about the components except the shebang was being driven by a Quad 306 - absolutely the last make I would have expected! So here it is, and currently I just love it! Being fed by my MySt 1866 R2R DAC and TAD AV32R preamp. Gorgeous.

Yup, I think it was with me, too - I wonder if we were in the room at the same time? ---- I don't recall anyone in a kilt eating haggis, though.

Can't get haggis in Bristol mate , well not when I lived there anyway . I was also young and very handsome then . Nobody fit that description during your visit to the Quad 306 room

Wow, it's amazing how are tastes can change.
I used to have a Quad 405-2 in my vinyl system which I loved with a tube pre. Loved the industrial aesthetic too. Can't remember why I moved it on!

Well down the road to Pipe&Slipperdom. Quad CDP-2 CD player and digital preamp feeding a DADAed Quad 306.

Is the 306 a current dumping design like the 405?

Yes. And the 606,707 and 909.
From my experience the 306 is the best sounding of them all, depending on your definition of best. Liveliest and with surprising punch for a Quad. I think it has the simplest circuit of the current dumpers.
It's limited to 50/70 wpc 8 and 4 ohms,and 6 amp current
Given that I'm very happy driving my MBLs with 8wpc of SET valves the 306 should be more than adequate!
I've only just started listening to the setup, I'll see how it goes.

.... I confess to being confused by the current dumping design. Use a powerful but relatively crude class B amp, but then add a few Watts from a class A amp circuit to sort it out. .... Have a drink of sewerage water, it's OK, a little crystal clear mountain spring water has been added to make it perfect. I'm assuming that's not an appropriate analogy.

... In the words of Yoda in Star Wars... There is another (Quad power amp on the way) .
Not a current dumper.
Must confess to really enjoying the Quad Sound atm. It seems strangely important not to press the volume above natural levels, things tend to fall apart then.

After liking the 405-2 I tried a 909 but didn't like it at the time, finding it too 'forward' - in truth it was probably much more neutral but I wasn't ready for it at the time!

Use a powerful but relatively crude class B amp, but then add a few Watts from a class A amp circuit to sort it out. It's kinda the other way round. Use a quality low power class A circuit, then bring in the big 'current dumper' power transistors only when needed to fill out the demand.

... In the words of Yoda in Star Wars... There is another (Quad power amp on the way) . Not a current dumper. Whoops, out of date already. There is another... pair of Quad power amps on the way. One is a bigger current dumper than the 306,the other harks back to an even earlier age

The only item of Quad gear I ever tried in my system was a 520f amp. I was very impressed with it indeed. Pulled from a studio, it stood in for my usual power amps very well. It was contributing to a pile of unused stuff though, so I sold it to a friend to fund another purchase.
