My understanding is it defrags the file so less errors But not sure It improves SQ as you heard

Finally a really good listen between Foobar and BugHead 8.14 with rewrite being used on both Good points of BH 1) Slightly deeper soundstage Good points of Foobar 1) Imdediate play (no waiting for player to load) 2) Good sound quality not quite in BH class 3) Server remains cool (the server is not working as hard) Revised findingings with power supply plugged in for a hour
I will be mostly using Foobar but will try BH updates

Rewrite doesn't do anything for me but I'm playing off SSD, I don't know whether John is.
I need to compare Foobar and BH again. I too am now using Fidelizer which has significantly tightened the bass with Foobar and removed all edginess as far as I can tell.

I have SSD too and makes a sufficent difference Weird such different results with rewrite Glad Fidelizer is helping

John, just to check, do you have a big SSD where you store all your music or a smaller one for your system?

I store all my music on the inbuilt SSD However when I recorded the files it was using SATA In future I will be recording direct to solid state

To get such a noticeable difference rewriting is barely believable - but I heard it with my own ears.

I've experienced differences with rewriting previously but for some reason not in my current config. I'm going to be make a number of comparisons today so I'll have another go.

Please report back. This rewriting thing is mad

I've just tried rewrite with one of my test tracks with some aggressive piano. I think is make a small difference to some of the harshness of notes struck with considerable energy. It's hard to know what's natural harshness and what isn't as piano doesn't sound smooth "in-person".
I've also compared Foobar to BH 8.10 in black screen mode. I'd say the soundstage of BH is a little better and the treble is a little better defined. Whether it's enough to justify the hassles of the BH UI, well I'm not sure but I have the option to use either Foobar or BH at any time so it's not as though it's a decision I have to make.

Thanks Clive. I heard a nice step up when John rewrote the file on his system.
I find BH as a front end daunting to say the least.

I can't explain why on much the same hardware I at best get a small difference. Maybe when I copied the files to the SSD they went on contigously as you'd expect, it was pretty much the first thing I did when I got the kit.
My SSD is 1TB so there shouldn't have been much non-contigous space needed for my 500GB of music. I don't know exactly what rewrite does though.

It seems like the linear power supply needs to be on awhile to get the best out of the server I am getting back to the point of finding it hard to tell the differences between Foobar and BH

Is this down to the warmed up PSU ?

Is this down to the warmed up PSU ? I guess it's hard for us to know. All I can offer is to measure the voltage on the 19V output just after switch on and say an hour later. I set mine to 19.04V so I'll see if it's drifted. My smps was 19.34V. Both figures are under no load conditions but of course the supplies are regulated. As for hearing differences then not hearing them; I'm not remotely saying John's done this but I've been guilty on a few occasions - I've not given my system time to warm up and the latter music I've played sounded better because the system was fully on song after 15 to 20 mins.
