Yes,yes I know it's to do with the circuit their in etc etc but humour me please.
Ive a couple of sets - Winged C 6550s : loads of detail and sweet as TAD(Svetlanas,I believe) KT88s : magic, detail, big soundstage plenty muscle Black Treasure 6CA7s : jaw droppingly good. I use these in an AVC EL34 Winged C EL34s : can't remember, haven't used them for ages Siemens EL34s : never used them yet so can't comment.
I also use Melz 6H8c,Foton 6H8C,and TJ Full musics as well as 6N3P DRs which are a complete bargain.
The difference between the Fotons - £20 for a matched quad and the TJs at £150 is negligible. You just don't really notice when they're changed. The Russian stuff,to me,is very good value.
What tubes does everyone else like?

My favourite is 833a, followed by GK-71 and KT66.
Here is an 833a with the filament lit up, it's 10V @ 10A = 100W
This is not my amp, but it gives a better idea of the valve size.

I like 6J6s but they have limited applications. I'm thinking of using them in a line level preamp at the moment with a novel approach for volume control.
Cheers, Alan

One of the nicest sounds I got was from some 100TH's I should go back and try them again some time. Then again, I have a 212 amp to finish, and two gm70 push pull amps to build as well. Need more time in the day, Oh, and 211 are close to being my favourite.

Mullard EL84s in a Leak Stereo 20. Magic circuit and within its limited envelope it creates the most liquid midrange I've ever known.

Yeah that 100TH amp was nice. Also like 2a3, 801a. Can't go wrong with EL84 either, such a musical little valve. I like the 45 too. Of the big valves, 211 can be lovely (I have a NOS pair in the cupboard) and I've heard lovely 212 and 833 amps.

Glad to see a few more tube heads on here Have to to say Ive never heard most of these, just the ones I've mentioned. Always fancied a listen to some EL84s but just can't justify another amp. That 833s huge!

212 are huge, but GM100 are in a different league.
Must admit I could be tempted with 212 if they were not so very expensive, and yes, I did look into the possibility of getting a couple of GM100, but decided against it. The 833a project is as big as I want to go.

Are most valves remnants from the 50s? I know some are still in production, including new models but its something I've never known.
Should I be stocking up on all the 5687 and ef86s I can get my hands on?

My fave valves are EL34, EL84 - superbly musical creatures both of them. The 6B4G direct heated triode is also high up on my list. the new KT120 from New Sensor, sold under the Tung Sol brand name is also a cracker. For small signal applications I like the 6SJ7 and 6AC7 pentodes. I like pentodes

I like EL34s as well but seem to find the 6CA7 head n shoulders above them. Different beast entirely I suppose. Seem to have more power and detail - if you get the chance get a listen to the Black Treasures, they really are superb. I use mine in an Affordable Valve Company amp and by Lord do they make the ANKs sing! Superb amp that as well - highly underrated. Quite fancy those KT120s as well but just cannot justify it!

At the moment, my fave valves have to be Tungsram.
I have recently put 1960's NOS Tungsrams in my phono stage (2 x ECC83 and 1 x ECC82) and listening to a classical concerto right now, I am having to turn the volume down considerably as the double-basses are SO much deeper than before, I can feel it going through me and my armchair! So am having to show a bit of concern for the neighbours ... The best compliment I can pay these tubes is that what I am listening to, feels the most 'life-like' sound I have had from my vinyl thus far ... Need to do some more extended listening sessions to really get to grips with what they have to offer.

I have absolutely no idea. The ones in my two valve amps sound pretty good. If you want, I can have a look to try and see the numbers on them. Should I be choosing between the big ones at the back and the small ones at the front or just pick any one from the total?? I'm just a techie at heart
