Strange thread for myself this For me 2a3 done correctly is superb, far more linear then a great many one trick pony 300b's models, almost matches the mid band, but with far better frequency extremes and just a more fuild musical presentation for me. Though again speaker choice is critical here. The other is the 211, more meat on the bone so to speak but just so right for more bigger more complex pieces of music and it delivers scale and dyanmics even with out having to resort to higher efficiency speakers. lastly the 833's I am afraid they are lot of hype for me, having heard these on numerous occasions now, can't see what all the fuss is about especially with hornings and the bigger horn type speakers. Plus the fun of having serious voltage around the valves themselves and the reilability of these unique envelopes (Tron???) , CE cirtification anyone

My GK-71 (as a triode) amps have been likened to the sound of a 211.
And as regards 833a, your opinion is as valid as anyone elses, but I really like them, even with sensitive speakers. I might like them even more when I get round to the rebuild.
I've not done 2A3, but have done 6B4g which some say is a bit better. Nice but not brilliant. And 300b ? Been there several timer in SET, but again, not my taste.

As with all things Pre, implementation is the key coupled the attention to detail required, correct components, personal tastes being engineered into the amplifier being built. I have been fortunate to listen to some of the most desirable valves amps around and have found the surrounding components having as big as or bigger say in their overall sound. From time to time I do manage to obtain spaces in the work diary that enable to play for my own benefit (not very often though ) and have never yet felt the urge to put one together (valve amp) Though a good friend from school keeps radio Caroline together at the weekend, he is rather good with thermionics. Prehaps one day when you have rebuilt your 833's you can convince me why you enjoy them so much.

The amp is for MY pleasure, and if it pleases anyone else that's just a bonus. I feel no need to justify what I like, or seek approval from others.

My fave valves are EL34, EL84 - superbly musical creatures both of them. The 6B4G direct heated triode is also high up on my list. the new KT120 from New Sensor, sold under the Tung Sol brand name is also a cracker. For small signal applications I like the 6SJ7 and 6AC7 pentodes. I like pentodes I can tell exactly who you are!

There are so many lovely sounding valves all dependent on implementation. But some valves bring their quality with them which it is very difficult to destroy with implementation.
this is why I find tonc's experience completely out of nowhere. I have never heard a commercial 833 amplifier but I would be amaised if they are as bad as all that, because I have never heard a diy 833a amp which did not dance to the wanderfull sonic nature of that true star in the valve world the 833.

Tung Sol KT120s for muscle, effortless and subtlety.
The 6SN7s they make are also pretty decent.
Sylvania, RCA or JAN Philips ECC82s deliver in the preamp I use, the two former for openness, the last for grip.
