Great Don't suppose you recall the capacitor value ? Just can't make it out from the pics .

Well, I've not gone to quite the same lengths as ChrisB (kept everything in the cabinet) but have just finished modding a pair of mine. Changed the inductor and capacitor (lesser quality cap than a clarity cap but wanted to keep the size down, but at least a presumed improvement on the original and an air-cored inductor about 4 or 5 times the size !). Dynamatted the baffle and part of the interior, braced the side walls with a simpler solution (threaded bar with two ordinary nuts each end so they 'lock'), gave the tweeters a thorough clean and resprayed a tatty exterior with plasticote. Replaced the woofer surrounds and used better wire for the connections other than those going to the tweeter. Result - they are heavier, that's for sure. Early days as they are probably running in a bit, but I wouldn't say it's night and day. They seem smoother and less peaky, efficiency is just the same (maybe, just maybe a tad less efficient) and the cabinets are certainly much less resonant. Come the weekend I may substitute them for my electrostatics in a 2+2 system and roll them off sub 200Hz or so to see what they can do. One question - I couldn't find a reasonably sized and priced 6.2uf cap so have used a 6.8uf. Anyone know the likely effect on the crossover characteristics ? Next project (I have several pairs of LX5s) might be to remove the crossover completely and actively bi-amp, but then I'd be expecting the LX5s to deliver the bass !

It sounds like you've been busy! I wonder if you noticed an improvement in the imaging and soundstage as I did with mine? Also has the bass improved? (Qualitatively rather than quantitatively).

Well, they're hooked up to my 2+2 Lyngdorf amps and bass units now. Crossed over at 220hz with a Linkwitz 4th order slope. impressions - certainly a significant step forward. Imaging is great ( albeit with less of a sense of height that comes from 1.4m tall panels) and integration with the system is, if anything, at least as good as with the stats. OK they don't have that last bit of air and speed of the stats but they must rank as one of the best small speakers I've heard. at less than one tenth of the price of the stats there's no question about VFM ! toe in seems important ( at least don't point the LX5s straight at you) but there's really very little to complain about. question now is whether to give the other three pairs the same treatment, although they fulfill less demanding duties ( PC speakers via a T class amp driven by USB input and analogue into a class t amp in the kitchen. not yet tried them full range, perhaps that will be next.

Good stuff. I've often wondered what would happen if they were doubled up with 2 per channel.

I've just spent some time replacing the missing images in this thread. Thanks Photobucket, for giving me the opportunity to use one of your competitors. Good luck with your new business model.
Thread restored to former glory.
