I have never had a turntable in my system before and I have always kind of fancied and this is my friends turntable that he is selling on eBay but is willing to let me have it for £100 that's a very generous offer from him but my question to you all is is this a good sounding turntable, kind of regardless of price? Thanks for your help www.ebay.co.uk/itm/282267437697?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649 And I guess another question that I have is, how would this sound compare to a very high end DIY DDDAC? I guess that's almost impossible for you to answer but if I'm going to get into analog it needs to be better offer me something different then my already very accomplished DAC

For a ton you can't go wrong. First deck I bought was a debut 2, i dont think it's worth 235, there are plenty of decks around at that money, but for 100 notes would be very hard pressed to get anything better. It will always be worth 100 quid plus and I would suggest it would be a very good starter deck with very easy set up and replaceable stylii when ( not if) you break the stylus. Everyone busts a stylus. If you like what you hear you can upgrade when you like Cheers ant

I don't know how much better the Debut 3 is than its predecessor but it would have to be night and day to. Make it worthwhile. After being out of hifi for a few years I bought a debut 2. It was so far removed from what I'd regard as high fidelity, it lasted about an hour. It never even came close to giving a hint of what vinyl can do. I have lived happily with things like the Revolver, Rega 2 and 3 and Mission 775. Not the Project though, it made music sound bad. I'd say buy any other turntable at the price. I seriously doubt it will be worse.

You will need to spend a good bit more to get a TT to sound as good as your digital system James But its a way to start the tt journey with to see if you want to explore further. Just be aware getting a really good sounding tt is not cheap but a lot of people really love what they do

I don't know the deck well enough to make a comment but for £100, I'm sure it's fine. Great if you want to play the odd album but that's it, I think. I don't believe it will give you more than a taste of what's possible from records and I see it as a bit of a dead end, as I don't think it could be meaningfully improved. The cheapest route into really top class vinyl replay nowadays has to be by getting yourself a Lenco for £120 or so and doing a little work yourself. A very small amount of work at low cost (clean up the bearing, set the motor and idler and replace the arm bearing blocks) should give you something that ought to outperform the Project (I'd guess - others might be able to confirm). By going the Lenco route though, the sky is the limit!

The Debut series is an ok introduction to record playing, but don't expect much more than an outline of the sound you desire. Lightweight would be my description.

Completly agree with Chris and should appeal to your DIY nature James

I've not heard the deck in question but my guess is that it won't cut it at all compared to your digital system and will be a waste of your time ... If you really want to give vinyl a proper go, you'll need to think about making more of an investment in it.

Well ....... I told my friend thanks for the generous offer of the TT for £100 but no thanks, and he has now given it to me along with a phonostage, as he would rather it go to me than anyone else. What a nice chap, didn't have the heart to say I started a thread here and no one rates his TT

Excellent James . it'll be interesting to see how you get on with it . I was going to recommend a Lenco GL75 too . I have what I consider a half decent FBA system and the GL75 ( after a little fettling ) doesn't sound any better or worse . It just sounds different and is a pleasure to use when I have the time to sit down and enjoy it Please keep us updated on your new vinyl system mate

Whatever I or others think of the Project, that's a lovely gesture. There is also one pleasure of vinyl you may still get to apprciate: The sheer tactile delight of handling a vinyl album and the serene ritual of spinning a disc. Nothing like it for me If you want to make the biggest improvement for the least money, change the cartridge. It's a huge limiting factor to any turntable. I'd choose an AT95e or better an AT110 but you'd probably get some really decent used MMs for that money too. The upside is that selling on the supplied Ortofon will probably almost pay for the upgrade. Edit: can I just add that I miss my vinyl so much out here. One day.......

Wasn't it you who complained about the vinyl warping in the heat Andrew . How would you store your LPs .

Wasn't it you who complained about the vinyl warping in the heat Andrew . How would you store your LPs . I feared that (and still kinda do) but I've been assured it's a bit of a myth. If anything it's the lack of decent acoustics out here that stops me from getting the vinyl going again. I could find a bigger place bit I'm really comfortable here and there's no guarantee I'd get an improvement. Probably the biggest limiting factor sonically is the double height ceiling, but it's something I love living in. For now I can at least enjoy other people's vinyl episodes by proxy

Hah ! Yes I enjoyed peoples vinyl episodes for many years before returning to it myself a few months ago . Fortunately I like where I live , although at -2 degrees this morning it's a bit parky . Having visited Cyprus a couple of times years ago I decided that I much preferred the extremes of cold to the extremes of hot weather . So I won't have to worry about the heat warping my very limited collection of vinyl

Being half Scots, I don't mind cold weather. I love blue skies and hate rain though. Sounds like your temperature right now is ideal for testing out the old Jimmy Hughes trick of freezing CDs. I bet they still won't come close to vinyl though I really hope James does get something from this that leads him to vinyl. It's special and it gives me a level of pleasure I haven't had from any other medium. Then there's the fun of tinkering which I'm sure he'd enjoy. Power supplies make a big difference to vinyl and there's plenty room for experiment with many decks.
