Speaker positioning versus room dimensions and room quality (use the clap test in the centre of the room). The room width is that which the speakers are positioned across. Compilation of posts submitted. Member | Room Width | Room Length | Speaker Distance | Speaker-to-Listener | Toe-in

Well, I surprised myself when measuring. I had thought the speakers were wider apart, but it turns out they are exactly equilateral with my listening position. Just happens that I laid it out that way. The room quality with the clap test is pretty dead with no discernible echo and only a tiny trace of flutter echo.

Isn't Room Quality subjective ?
I think mine is average, could be horribly wrong

My measurements ... 6.0 3.8 3.0 2.75 Yes MBL 116F Fairly dead. If you'd care to include those in your table. I assume Speaker Distance is distance between the speakers. That tends to vary a bit, depending on mood.

Distance between speakers? .....centre of tweeter....centre of cabinet....inside edges .....outside edges.... ? I used distance between centre-fronts.

Yip,mine are both in here. No idea of space between them(maybe 10feet) and they're toed n a bit towards the settee.
Pretty lucky to be able to have them in the living room what with all her stuff...

Can you give me the rest of the measurements, Chris, and I'll put them in?

Thanks, Chris. This is interesting: you have the speakers placed wider than equilateral; is this due to the imaging properties of your speakers? Perhaps they beam less than classic designs.

Unconventional speakers : unconventional approach. They're bipolar, so they use the in-phase rear output to the advantage of the soundstage. The thing they require most is freedom from the influence of the side walls, so in this orientation and in this room, I am able to do that and still have them far apart. The toe-in effectively increases that distance to the side walls.

Jerry's speakers also have in-phase output from a less directional source and he also sits a little closer than their distance apart, I see.

Distance between speakers? .....centre of tweeter....centre of cabinet....inside edges .....outside edges.... ? This is a good point, especially when some on this forum call my speakers 'barn doors'

Well, yes. The differences between those four dimensions could be significant in some designs. Offset tweeters on a wide baffle like mine are, compared to some modern pencil thin design, for example.

Yup, and no lack of centre fill, on the contrary it is very focussed right across the soundstage - perhaps counter-intuitively, less speaker directionality seems to give you solider imaging.

My room dimensions are a little unusual. The most problematic of my room dimensions is its narrow width at only 2.6m. The length of the room is 6.2m and the speakers are about 1.7 m apart. Another really useful dimension to appreciate (although you can probably work this out with the keen mathematical eye) is the distance the drivers are away from the side walls and in my case it's about 40 cm . However I do find that even in this odd room that I can get an incredible sound from my hi-fi, although I would love to have a room that is much wider .

You lot would cry if you saw how i have my speakers. I will purposely do everything against what is seen to be de rigueur in the Hi-Fi world.
