What Made Me Laugh Today -
I just got a sponsored ad on TAS for Andre Rieu and his Strauss Schlock - ha ha ha ha ha, sorry ad men but there's more chance of me attending a luncheon with Lee Anderson than that dreckmeister's 1970's light entertainment snooze fest ...

I have to admit, I've bought several of his CDs . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . as gifts for my 98-year-old Mum, who is also a long-time Mantovani fan.

Seeing James Last live was one of the most enjoyable live gigs I ever attended, believe it or not. And he had Big Jim Sullivan on guitar. My late father was a huge fan, and he suckered me into going.

RIP James Bowman, the wonderful countertenor.
His recording of Viv's Stabat Mater will be omnipresent in my collection.

On a more cheery note I have now joined the Barbican as a member. I think the level of benefits for the modest £59 fee is most decent. www.barbican.org.uk/join-support/membershipI'm booking a large number of concerts for the forthcoming season so the priority booking and 20% discount is looking good.

I've noticed how many good recordings they have produced for such a small country.
The Iceland SO and Oslo Philharmonic are the two Scandinavian orchestras that immediately come to mind, both from countries with small populations.

Klaus Mäkelä strikes me as a bit of a narcissist.
How many world-class conductors have their own YouTube channel to plug their wares?
Not cool.

Some nice music on BBC Four tonight from 9pm.
St John's Passion with JEG, so should be excellent, followed by Mozart's Requiem.

Marin Alsop has been named principal guest conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra.
Good stuff, I will make a point of seeing her.

The 5th is fantastic.
However, it is the Daily Mail 'reporting'.
