I had a SMSL Q5 Pro - perhaps the first person around here who did? I am struggling to understand all the fuss about the remote handset! It seemed perfectly serviceable to me. Maybe I am easily pleased.

My silver ones had difficulty working, ate batteries far too quickly and ergonomically iffy

Ah - maybe I was just lucky with a working one? I had no problems at all - used it off and on for 6 months or so, I think.

My working one wavered and ate batteries. Send me your remotes and I can get them into the same state

Mine decides when it wants to work and when it doesn't ... It tests my patience on a daily basis!

Just tested mine and it's fine. Then again, as it's within arm's reach I don't use the remote.

Next new toy - a pair of these Phonon cans ... These are a £320 pair of headphones that I saw going for a crazy low price nearly new so thought I would give them a go. They get excellent reviews generally. Build quality is pretty good, without being anything to get excited about; if I was paying full price I would certainly expect more. With my SMSL M3 they have the extra bass that the Superlux is missing but don't sound quite as open in the upper registers. The Phonons have a slightly more sophisticated sound overall. This either means that the M3 may be holding them back from giving their best or that the Superlux are an amazing bargain, or a combination of the two. The Superlux are a bargain however you look at it though. One thing I'm not so keen on is that the Phonons sit on your ear, whereas the bigger Superlux sit more comfortably over the ear. They manage to be surprisingly comfortable even so. So I've decided that I will try a slightly more up-maket DAC / headphone amp set up once the right opportunity comes along as I would like to see what they can really do.

I've never heard of Phonon. Is the lettering of their brand name supposed to be wonky?

Cyrus One. I had one of the Cyrus One Mk II models up until recently in my second system. Not bad although I found it a bit bright. Classic amps though.

Look what Mr UPS just bought me Well, that was generous of him. ---- I feel I do have to ask a couple of questions, though. Is it good? Where is it destined for?

It's a slightly nostalgic purchase for me - I remember doing a shoot-out of 5 or 6 budget amps in Manchester's 'The Music Room' back in the 80's and being really impressed by its ability. Coloured, yes of course, but infectious and lots of fun.
For me it's a design classic - I just love the aesthetics. And so fully featured with inputs and a MM/MC phono stage ... I have always wanted to own one but it's going to be used for my son's first ever (vinyl) system.

Here’s a new SUT on the block! Hashimoto HM-3 built into a case by those excellent chaps at Deco Audio. First impressions as I’m blasting out Toto IV are that an indeterminate number of veils have been lifted, but it’s not a night and day thing at all. Indeed it shows what a superb performer my Fidelity FRT-3 is! More listening required.

The Hashimotos are excellent SUTs.

Sounds like a useful move on your part, Jules. I spent a long time trying out a long list of SUTs before I was able to settle on something that I felt was the best fit for my system, but the Hashimoto was one I missed out. I have heard it since and been impressed though.

Indeed! I'm also rather pleased with my £2 plinth. It's a piece of 'mild steel plate' that I found on ebay with exactly the same footprint as the SUT. Put some spare sorbothane feet underneath and job's a good 'un ...
