This speaker bakeoff has been brewing in the background for maybe three years or so.
My speakers are currently the DIY Lampizator P17's, a well known open baffle DIY speaker that you come across from time to time and its a corker! There is a chappy on the Wam, can't remember his name, even though I bought four NVA amps from him. Anyway, he had the Lampi P17's and he modded the crap out of them. I haven't heard much to better my Lampi P17's under 5k.
After about a year of owning these speakers, I thought I have just got to try other Lampizator OB speakers further up the range as I enjoy these speakers that much. I decided to go for the P23, using whopping Altec 15" DC midrange and big Altec horn tweeters. These drivers are expensive, with postage from the States and import duty I probably spent about 650 pounds, or maybe a bit more. Bonkers? Yes of course it is.
Well despite a few false starts I plan to knock up, literally, a baffle to house the P23 drivers so I can see if its a project worth taking further.
Along with the new OB development, I have also bought a Berringer iNuke NU100 DSP power amp as I also want to try out running my current P17 bass actively, to see what difference that makes.
As John has just made a new OB or Baffleless OB speakers, I thought it would be very interesting to add his speakers into the mix as they sound very interesting; and they are a design that I am also considering. John also has bat ears, so he is always a good second opinion.
TAS also has its very own speaker maker, steveeb, who will also be attending. It would be great if he brings his latest speakers but I'm not sure if he is going to.
So it should be a really interesting day. There is probably room for one more, if anyone is interested, then that will make four of us. I'm sure I could knock together some lunch and a few beverages to round the day off nicely.
