My speakers unfortunatly came no way close to what they are capable off Sorry guys still cannot really figure out what went wrong but usually a lot more open and dynamic I reckon about 60% of their potential Maybe even as low as 40%

John, I've got to say that I'm really greatful for your huge effort today. To take your speakers apart, drive them across London, rebuild them, set up your DSP amp and your speakers then reverse the entire process; you must have spent 4-5 hours doing all of this, and on your day off! So thanks again. We don't know what went wrong with Johns set up but there was major distortion coming from his speakers, leaving us all ........baffled. Sorry, crap joke. They certainly had oodles of good tight and solid bass with the mid and top end showing so much potential but it was just masked by distortion. Very odd, as I said at the time it was probably those dodgy interconnects I had We then heard Steve's new speakers that he is working on with two drivers per Chanel which I found spot on. Very tight, fast and solid bass, open mid and very airy top end. We heard a lot of music with a bassoon leading the way which sounded just as it should as a wind instrument made of wood, the tone was excellent, I could have listened to these speakers all day long. And of course as you would expect from Steve the fit and finish was exceptional. I visit Hifi shops rarely, but to me they are filled with too many MDF speakers with a very cheap vinyl wrap around veneer. Johns speakers are made from ten sheets of Nordic ply all sandwiched together then CNC cut to perfection, then carefully finished in the finish you require. Quite exceptional. If the bloke would only post on forums more, he might give us all the oppertunity to see some decent pictures of them, hope that was a subtle enough hint At the end of the day my speakers were put back into position. After them being called barn doors and kitchen work tops, I hit play and I was very comfortably reassured that it was worth putting up with their looks for the sake of the sound they produce. Yes they are but ugly but the wall of sound they project and the size and scale is emence. On some bad recordings they may be a little hot in the treble, but on everything else they seem to integrate together brilliantly. Will I ever build the P23's? I don't know. The speakers I have I only just about get away with in my room, my hunch is the horns will be too much for my room, but they are still an itch I want to scratch, and the drivers are just sat here...........we will see. I have to say again, how sorry we all felt for John, and how greatful we were for his efforts today. I'm sure I'll get to hear his speakers again at some point. There are others on this forum that have heard them when they are flying, so do please speak up so we can know your thoughts.

Only one other person heard them so no one else can comment but extremly disappointed with the distoration present I thought Steve new speakers are very close to being ready, just getting that balance spot on James you do not need to channge your speakers I think you get more using a Blue ray player with a USB input or something like this that will do Spotify and Kodi www.amazon.co.uk/Android-Quad-Core-Fully-Loaded/dp/B010588R60 to get the best out of your DAC until you get the DDAC up and running which is a beast of a DAC

I'll try to comment tomorrow. I have some thoughts though I've no idea about the distortion.

Think distortion was caused by behringer sitting on top off the preamp Only time we used it and would explain why sounded so poor

That may be a good explanation mate. When we used my speakers and Steve's we didn't use your Behringer amp. Your amp was sitting on a pretty substantial dual mono PSU, and you know what I'm like with the size of my toroids.

Thanks for your generous hospitality James, and to John for the effort I know was involved to bring your speakers out to play. We may not have reached our expectations but was still a thoroughly enjoyable get together. Always a pleasure to hear your system and there are aspects that I invariably retain as comparative reference points. Yes, disappointing not to put John's Beasts through their paces but will surely hear them again; we know he wouldn't have changed to them if they weren't something quite special. Visually I don't find them a challenge at all, they are very compact and low. With some attractively finished wood (what little there is) and maybe a can of black spray I think the slightly industrial appearance could be transformed into something quite stealthy and desirable. It was a revelation to hear my speakers in your system. You always seem to have notably propulsive, tight and 'fruity' bass, which I have previously attributed to your OBs, but there is obviously a lot more going on behind them. I would never have claimed we could achieve a similar character from twin 4" full range drivers in a relatively small horn cabinet. The texture and tone was fascinating, albeit volume limited by the drivers' maximum excursion - I'd expect these would be crossed to a sub for the funky volumes we were trying for It was a day when the Devil was determined to fart in our kettle! The rear end shunt from a lorry that I suffered on the way to you looks like it's written off our car (how bloody unfair is that when it's not your fault) and I had a 3 hour crawl to get home like you usually experience when you come to me. Nevertheless I won't be put off and I'd love to take you up on your offer to try my speakers in your system again when I've made the final adjustment.

Nice one Steve. Colins class A amps are well known for bottomless bass, presenting a very deep, wide, detailed and sweet sound. The other contributors I would say are accredited to the MTBPS which is a bespoke 3kVa balanced power supply, you won't find anything else like it. There are no fuses in my mains at all. The rest of it I'd put down to the dedicated power I have coming straight from the incoming tails and bypassing the Hous altogether, hence the dedicated consumer unit on the wall behind the left speaker. Thanks for your effort mate. The door is always open.
