I think for me it was more about remembering the hours spent sifting through records in Tower Records Piccadilly, the big HMV on Oxford Street, the first Virgin Megastore, Simon's Records and Covent Garden Records. It's all nostalgia and those places are probably all gone, too.

Yes, I get that. The best part about LPs for me was the hunting, great fun was had sifting through record bins in search of musical treasure - it all tended to go downhill once the dang things were bought.

An update for your amusement. A good few days ago I came home to my system, fired it up and got... no music. Everything seemed to work, the Asus/Volumio was doing its thing, the Mutec was showing a signal lock and so was the LKS but no sound emerged. I tried debugging it all with what I had and simply could not get it working until I reinstalled the USB interface in the LKS and tried the Asus direct - it worked! Logic determined that the culprit was the Mutec. I took it to Tony's and we tried it on his system - it worked perfectly. Grr!
One thing led to another and Tony took both my Mutec and LKS away to determine what was going on, and found them both to be working. Perplexing! Meanwhile, I had a loan NuForce DAC80 with USB interface and that was working fine, too. Nowhere near the detail retrieval of the LKS but at least, by a process of elimination, we know it's a small gremlin like an earth lockout or possibly a faulty cable. When I reassemble everything, I'm going to build it up slowly, testing the system at each stage.
So while the LKS was with Tony, I asked him to breath some more Coherent goodness over it and he has re-wired the mains cabling, changed some of it for better 3D cables and re-routed the grounding arrangements. This alone has given a 20dB improvement in noise floor (i.e. 20dB lower than the previous level). He is now looking at some capacitor and diode changes to further improve the power supply.
I'm really looking forward to getting it back next week and enjoying longer music sessions again.

That's good news M - the mods sound very interesting too, looking forward to your report on them. Thanks. One interesting point made by Tony is that the LKS resolves leading edge detail better than any other DAC - I chose the ES9038 Sabre chipset because of its resolution retrieval but it's nice to hear it from someone who does not give light praise. I think it's an important point when selecting the chipset/topology for your next DAC: the trade-off is largely ESS for detail over texture/depth; AKM for texture/depth over detail. This is greatly simplifying things and, of course, both chipsets do a fantastic overall job. Just select on the musical presentation that's of primary importance to you, then fine tune with the filter selections.
